Kind of appropriate that K-ON and DMC tied for 4th since K-ON's Yui imagines that her school's light music club band looks like DMC and almost flees in panic because of that.

I'm kind of surprised to see DMC on this list.

I don't know what it is with Nodame Cantabile, it always comes up but I've never managed to see it. I don't knew if something I'd be interested in, but I want too check it out. Does anyone know if it's any good?

I haven't read the manga or watched the anime, but I am loving the Live Action series of it.

I've watched it through a few times, certainly it has appeal, very strong on classical music (mainly piano and violin, with orchestral music as well).

The only reason not to watch Nodame Cantabile would be if you absolutely detest classical music. It's a stellar series (second and third seasons are notably weaker than the first though still enjoyable) filled with very memorable and fun characters.

Also omiya, you really should edit that link out as it's not an official link. You can watch the whole first season legally (with Animax dub which is actually much better than usual Animax dubs) here: http://www.crackle.com/c/nodame-cantabile

Thanks guys.

I love instrumental music, though I enjoy contemporary more than classic. But if the characters and the show in general are good, the music will be the icing on the cake.
I'll see if I can find it and marathon it this season, since it's the weakest season in years.

Nodame Cantabille is excellent and everyone should watch it! Everyone should probably read it too, but the Dell Rey editions are OOP (and unfortunately incomplete).

Why won't someone license Last Quarter by Ai Yazawa? Didn't NANA sell? Paradise Kiss was printed by two separate companies, so it must have done well. I'd love to see other music manga in English, too (I'm sure the original manga version of Kids on the Slope is better than the anime, despite the lack of music), but not translating Ai Yazawa works seems like leaving money on the table.

I think the most interesting thing about this list is how demographic neutral it is. Do women in Japan love K-On as much as men?

Thanks for the link, it was watchable after installing Adobe Flash (not everyone runs it and it seems that too many streaming sites require it without explicitly saying so). Don't get me started about how one can't get a paid account on Nico Nico Douga without either a Paypal account or a VISA/Mastercard credit card - I only have a VISA debit card and do not wish to support Paypal.

I did buy a legal DVD Region 3 set of series 1 (Sony Pictures licensed for sale in Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan and Philippines only) from play-asia.com, and that seems to be the only way to get a licensed copy that includes Japanese audio and English subtitles (as well as Korean and English audio, and Thai, Korean, Bahasa Indonesia, Malay, Chinese Traditional Taiwan and Chinese Traditional Cantonese subtitles). It's the same Animax English dub, but with more options. It plays fine on my pc and on my DVD/blu-ray player.

I'm not sure if it is still available from play-asia.com.

I just preferred to see and hear it with Japanese audio and English dub.

I suppose that seasons 2 and 3 of the anime are only legally available in Japanese only (and those editions don't even have Japanese subtitles)?

I haven't read the entire manga for Nodame Cantabile but I will say that the Live Action and the Anime are great. I can't choose which is better. The Paris-hen and the Opera-Hen arcs are kind of meh compare to the original story line. The Live Action went and made two special ep. and two movies, while the Anime had 13 episode seasons to finish the story.

I just think that Nodame Cantabile is my all time favorite anime that I can watch anytime I want because it's not a show that requires you to be in a specific mood to watch.

I haven't read DMC but from the images Google-sensei showed me... it has some mature scenes which are kind of okay with me but I don't know how women weren't turned off by it.

I can see why they picked Beck because it was so expressive despite it being a music-oriented manga.

I'm still meaning to watch Kids on the Slope - I've seen Yuuka Nanri at various concerts 5 times now.

Cinema Today said that approximately 20% of the audience at première of the K-ON! theatrical film were women. So, probably some women watched the K-ON! anime. (In fact, a person who answered the MyNavi Woman questionnaire and voted K-ON! said, 'アニメのほうを見ていた,' and it suggests the person does not read K-ON! manga.)

The number of persons who answered the MyNavi Woman questionnaire in question is 236. The percentage of persons who voted each manga are:

Nodame Cantabile → 47.9%
NANA → 17.4%
The Last Quarter of the Moon → 3.4%
Detroit Metal City → 3.0%
K-ON! → 3.0%
Solanin → 2.5%

So, 3rd place and below didn't necessarily receive many votes, as compared with 1st place and 2nd place.

(And, actually, when a person answered a MyNavi Woman questionnaire, there is no guarantee that the person is really a woman.)

Like this case, when you read an anime/manga-related English article which has a Japanese 'source book', it might be better to think that there might be factors which the gaijin who wrote the English article doesn't know/didn't mention.
