I've heard mixed things about Flowers of Evil, but the premise sounds interesting so I think I'll still give it a try.

I would say that Flowers of Evil is worth your time. It has a good story with well written characters, the background music sets the mood, and the OP and ED are... different. But in a good way. The thing that many people got upset about is the animation style. While the rotoscoped animation captured the spirit of the manga, the actual look of the characters was to "real" (ugly) and too far from the manga. Here is a comparison: This drastic deviation from the original art style rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. I liked the visual style, but I never read the manga, so I went into it without bias. The only thing I really disliked about the show is how it ended. Not that the ending was bad, but its one of those ends where you have to read the manga to continue (unless Hell freezes over and we get a 2nd season). Its still on Crunchyroll if you have that available. Check it out. It was Flowers of Evil (and AoT) that got me back into anime after a long, long break. |

I, too, really enjoyed Flowers of Evil as it aired and will be picking this set up. I was also someone who saw the show before the manga and therefore wasn't swayed by the difference in styles and enjoyed it for what it was. I will say one thing, though, and that's that this show could quite easily be edited down into a 2-hour movie, given the very, very deliberately slow pacing of the episodes.

I've been watching anime for 13-14 years, and Flowers of Evil is one of the rare shows that I would hazard to call a "masterpiece," up there with other surreal classics like "Serial Experiments Lain" and "Paranoia Agent."
