Toji creeps the hell out of me. He seems so happy-go-lucky, but there's something really off about him. I think he's by far, the most dangerous of the two.

Yeah I feel the same way. The scene in the stairs with Toji and Lisa made me really suspicious of Toji.

Cool. I'm glad FUNi has this. I hope they have the rights to home release so that can do a dub, too.

This is easily the best first episode of anything from this season for me. I will be following several shows, but only this and Aldnoah have really pulled me in and made me giddy and excited for the next episode. Hopefully both shows can follow through. I have slightly higher expectations for this after that AMAZING first episode though.

I really liked this first episode! The PV's got me I just love the opening theme song, it really is intriguing. They built up a lot of intriguing backstories for the 3 main characters, I'm interested to see what's going on with that girl and the health problem she has(at least it seems as she has some type of nausea from time to time). That guy from the police that used to be a detective is also interesting and we still are yet to see the white haired woman from the PV's, overall this episode got me hooked.

Quote: | Or perhaps it's because none of the characters immediately feel all that compelling. In fact, that may be the main complaint: each of them feels like he or she is just going through the motions rather than being an actual character, especially Lisa. If the story is going to focus on characters who are going to be bad guys – and let's face it, no matter how wronged they may have personally been, endangering civilians through acts of terror makes them bad guys – then it's even more important to make them involving characters from the get-go, and this first episode just fails at that. |
Well I did find all the characters intriguing, which is enough for now. Touji would be a likable weirdo... you know if he didn't talk about killing a high-schooler. The episode brought up a bunch of questions about their back-stories and motivations, to which I want to know the answers. It's clear that there's more to these two then their first appearances.
For Lisa... well I have sympathy for bullied characters in general. But her and Arata have a decent character arc. For Lisa it's the choice between taking a leap of faith and death (which is normally a non-choice, but she was a person who didn't think she had alot to live for). For Arata it's his desire to atone for the past versus his desire to stick with the plan. I like how it takes the normal "outcast teenager finds outcast friends" plot and makes it really really sinister.
I guess the problem is that we only have hints of what's Lisa's life was like and we don't get too far into any of the character's heads. Lots of plot and set-pieces, not a whole lot into character for now.
The reality subtext does make it uncomfortable to watch though. When the dust clouds start enveloping all I can think of is the carcinogens that caused massive health problems during the real 9/11.
Had the same problem watching "Beasts of the Southern Wild". During the real Katrina poor people were stranded in a stadium with no help or supplies arriving, and shot at if they tried to leave. So watching the second half was a tad uncomfortable.
