Sweeeeeeeet. Love me some Shin Megami Tensei.

But how about some official translations for the original Digital Devil Story light novels?

Wait.. July 31? That's like... three days from now.

I'm somewhat shocked at the really short notice, but also pretty hyped (because MegaTen). Definitely gonna check this out.

So it's an alternate version of Digital Devil Saga? Those character designs sure look different.

The author of these novels was originally supposed to do the game's story, but she wasn't able to stick with it due to illness. I guess she wanted to show how she originally imagined things.

And I am very surprised that ANN reported on this...especially since Bento Books announced that they were going to release them last year. Never too late for more exposure though!

Couldn't agree more. I can't even find unofficial translations for those.

Just need to decide whether I want the paperback or hardcover edition. Really curious to see how different these books are to the games. Honestly found the second game to be kind of disappointing story-wise (not bad, just disappointing), so it would be awesome if the books were more fleshed-out and the story reached its full potential. That's assuming this does well enough for Bento to release the rest in English, of course.

A fan-translation of the first 2 books can be found here. A translation for the final book seems unlikely at this point.

The license for this was announced June of last year with a projected 2014 release. Earlier this year(?; possibly late last year), Bento said it was to be released in July. And then on June 30rd, they announced the actual release date of July 31st and HC pre-orders opened up on July 1st.

A LOT of websites missed all these news bits. So I don't blame you about the surprise. I didn't find out about this till November, I think. So I was able to follow it closely. I can't wait to get my pre-order in the mail. Bento Books announced today that all the pre-orders are being shipped tomorrow.

I wonder if the translation will be consistent with the Avatar Tuner games. Y'know, "Assignment"->"Vanguard," "Merrybell"->"Maribel," stuff like that.

Betting...no.

Not a direct answer but maybe?

Quote:

Did you play the Digital Devil Saga games while translating this, or did you avoid them?

I haven’t actually played them yet, but I’m certainly quite familiar with them at this point (a shout-out and big thank you to all the folks out there who keep such comprehensive wikis and fan sites, and post such thorough “Let’s Play” videos to YouTube). Seeing as how Digital Devil Saga was recently rereleased on PSN though, I’m hoping to give it a whirl sometime soon.

Actually, my initial plan was to intentionally go through and translate the book ‘game-unseen,’ in order to ensure that I treated the novel as its own entity and wouldn’t be influenced by previous localization choices, since the books aren’t a simple retelling of the games. That plan went out the window very early on though, because the setting was so bizarre that I needed some additional context to wrap my head around it, especially when I was just getting started.

In the end though, I’m glad I reversed my initial decision. Over the course of the project I saw just how passionate and devoted the fans of Shin Megami Tensei and Digital Devil Saga are, and I think it’s really crucial to respect the audience for a project as unique as this one. While the novel will certainly shatter fan expectations in many ways (due to inherent differences between the books and the games), I think it’s important to make sure that the aspects of the original, Japanese books that were familiar to fans of the game remain that way in the English translation.

A sample of Chapter 1 is available to read on the website. From there, you can see that "Vanguard" is still used. Not too sure about Merrybell/Maribel. I can confirm that later, when I get my copy.

Though, there's a GameFAQs post that mentioned stuff the translator said about the translation. (Kevin Frane tweeted a lot when he was reading and translating the novels.) It mentioned:
Quote:
- Character names are basically the same. Some of the names of the actual Atma Avatars were changed, as they were originally mistranslated from the original Sanskrit language. For example, "Varna" from the games is now properly named "Varuna"

- Volume 1 roughly equates to the first half of the first game.

- Terminology specific to Atlus games is not used (such as spell names), however, this is ALSO the case of the original Japanese novels. Atlus is pretty much NOT involved with the project, and Quantum Devil Saga could be considered a separate IP entirely.

- Bento Books intends to release the other four volumes, and possibly even other Megami Tensei novels (those are a bit harder to get out in English however, as MegaTen novels come from many different publishers) but the main factor is how successful Quantum Devil Saga Vol. 1 is, so PLEASE SUPPORT IT.

There's also an interview with Kevin Frane (the translator) posted on Bento's page for Avatar Tuner. They took questions from Facebook and Twitter for this. So there weren't too many questions asked. Plus there's a podcast from Cathedral of Shadows posted on YouTube. They interviewed him back in January.

Hey folks, translator Kevin Frane here, just chiming in with a few answers to folks' questions.

So, as far as terminology goes, I kept things consistent with the two Digital Devil Saga games in most instances, where applicable. So, the tribe names in the book are the same (e.g., Maribel instead of Merrybell, Wolves instead of Hounds, etc.).

The big exceptions were for Sanskrit terms that had been either incorrectly rendered in the games, or which had been given less-common spellings than the ones accepted in English. This typically applies to some of the Atma Avatars, so as mentioned, 'Varna' is now 'Varuna,' 'Prithivi' is now 'Prithvi,' and so on.

The one notable exception to aforementioned exception is in the case of Jinana; while her name certainly comes from the Sanskrit term jnana ("knowledge"), in this case, I thought it was better to keep an established character name, and just from an aesthetic standpoint as a name, I think it flows better with the 'i' in there.

(It's also worth pointing out that the original Japanese novel includes some Sanskrit terms written out in Roman letters that were transliterated improperly, including even the 'om mani padme hum' that's fairly central to the in-world mythos; these instances have been fixed for the English release.)

It's really exciting to see the fans hyped up for the book's release! I really hope people like it. Just a few more days, now!

So, SO happy this is getting a kindle release! It's always a frustration when LN's don't get digital releases. I read everything on my kindle now-a-days, so this is perfect for me!

*coughs at Lovely and her kindle obsession*

Fancy meeting you here...

Personally, I'm disappointed that these aren't being distributed by Right Stuf, since I pretty much buy 90% of my books from them.
