Motion-capture will not be considered animation under the rules.

Which should actually disqualify most CG animations these days, since they use mocap to gather all of the facial expressions and posing.

Other than Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, I've never heard of a fully animated feature using motion capture. Rotoscoping, yes (which has similar roots), but not full motion capture. Having characters like Rocket and Groot don't make Guardians of the Galaxy animated, and there's a huge difference in production.

Now, I'm happy with these changes. I'm fuzzy on how the rules for American animated features work, regarding cross-category eligibility, but this sounds like they're loosening the restrictions on qualification, if they're not going to allow foreign animated films in the foreign film category anymore.

Although, it is kind of locking the barn door, now that Robert Zemeckis will never be let near another mo-cap unit for the rest of his career..

Well sounds like hand-drawn animation (including anime) or CG animation that doesn't use mocap may have a chance of winning this award in the future.

Foreign-language films are still banned from the Best Motion Picture Drama and Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical categories. Animated films also cannot compete in those categories.

Can we just talk about what a load of crap this is? Like the Golden Globes committee doesn't have the attention span to actually watch a foreign or animated film. Forget changing the rules for foreign animated works, I want there to be no bias against any type of film for the awards.

Isn't the Golden Globes still an American award? Other countries are free to treat their national awards the same way.

The Globes are voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a tiny group of just ninety members as compared to the hundreds of members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who vote on the Oscars.

I see this change as perhaps reducing the chances for a foreign animated feature to get an award. Any year those films go up against an entry from Disney/Pixar or Dreamworks, they seem pretty likely to lose.

I don't know about the Globes, but Disney has only won one Academy Award for anything other than music (and that was Frozen, just this year).

The Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film was first awarded for 2006. Of the 8 years 2006-2013, Pixar (distributed by Disney) took 6 awards, Walt Disney Animation Studios itself took 1 award, and a conglomerate including Nickelodeon Films took 1 award.

    * 2006 -- Cars
    * 2007 -- Ratatouille
    * 2008 -- WALL-E
    * 2009 -- Up
    * 2010 -- Toy Story 3
    * 2011 -- The Adventures of Tintin
    * 2012 -- Brave
    * 2013 -- Frozen

Indeed. Animation as well as foreign films are already second-class citizens at award shows, but this would just seal the nail in the coffin for anime films.

Beowulf, The Polar Express, A Christmas Carol, Mars Needs Moms. Like EricJ2 said though, all were Robert Zemeckis works, and it looks like he's done working with that. I think there was a Tarzan animated movie that just got released on video that uses mocap. A lot of video game cut-scenes use it as well.

Interesting under the new definition the 2011 winner would have been banned from even consideration since that used Motion Capture.

Looking at the list of Oscar winners, seven of the thirteen were awarded to Pixar (now Disney).

The absence of 2-D animated features on this list (other than Spirited Away, of course) shows what the industry thinks is important.
