I get that your intentions by this are good, but I really don't agree with that. Attack on Titan is not "brainless." It may not always deliver its themes in the most convenient way for some, but they're still there. In full force. And you can tell that its intentional by the creators. You wouldn't see nearly as much of those "trivial character interactions" if it wasn't.

Also, maybe it's just you but a lot of people actually prefer those Madoka movies to the series. I like them both about equally. Each does different things better than the other.

I don't think I would call Attack on Titan brainless either. Sure its not a high minded series by any means, but it isn't as brainless as your typical shonen series.

As for the Madoka movies, I don't think it was just the reviewer who felt this way. Everyone I've talked to who has seen the movies, and the series, rate the series well above the movies. Of course that isn't everyone by any means. I personally enjoy the series more, but the movies aren't terrible by any stretch of the imagination.

By brainless, I mean that it's not necessary to analyze the series in order to enjoy it. Certainly, you can, and you'll get more out of it, but it's not required. (By contrast, I think it's harder to watch something like, say, Penguindrum, and not think about what you're consuming.)

Most commercially successful works have that multi-level appeal. You can really dig into it, or you can just enjoy it on a surface level, and just enjoy seeing people sticking swords into titans. Were it not for the latter aspect, I don't think the series would have become as popular as it is.

Why is it that every review I've seen of Attack. on Titan seems written with this sense of moral obligation to relate that the show "isn't the best?" Sure, if you're grading on pure artistic merit, against other less pulpy shows, it wouldn't hold up, but that's not what Attack on Titan is about, and that's not why people watch it. What Attack on Titan does try to do, it does really, really well. You could nitpick about points in execution, like bad pacing, but there's really something about the show that makes even tough critics forget about them, and just enjoy the show for what it is. And that in my mind makes it a really top notch show.

Because it isn't? Rolling Eyes

It's the equivalent of a dumb summer blockbuster to appeal to masses or better yet in the same vain of "The Walking Dead". People watch for the hype and nothing more and once that initial thrill is gone all you have left is a poorly paced poorly animated piece of work that can be enjoyed for it's style rather than it's execution.

Actual tough critics scrap the show down to its bare bones, shills don't even bother to highlight any of the problems and ignore everything else. Criticism in general has lost any merit when it comes to TV and film.

Is it weird that, with Nozaki-kun, I've enjoyed it so much that I'm down to the last 4 episodes...and I don't want to watch them because it'll bring me to the end? Laughing

Surprised by how much I've been enjoying the series. It's probably been my favourite of this season from its first episode, just barely scraping by Barakamon for that title.

Ah, gotcha. I can sympathize with that.

"Poorly animated piece of work." Alright then. Neutral

Then I guess I'll pull out the "we must have watched different shows" card. I mean yeah, at brief points it employs a still frame or they resort to the flapping mouths that the medium loves so much, but for the most part it's extremely fluidly animated. And compared to many other shows in the competition? Blows them out of the water.

Oh, and I'm just gonna stick a "rolling eyes" smiley right here ---> Rolling Eyes to make my argument seem superior to all the other pathetic anime peasants' because that seems to be the mindset of a lot of forum users on here.

Wait, there are people who hate Madoka Magica? They're not allowed to vote or drive cars, are they?

Haha. I get this is a joke, but really. I know people with a deep hatred for the series, and to be honest, it usually tends to be related to a personal bias or a complete mis-representation of the show. I'm not talking about people who just thought it was nice and not much more. I'm talking about people who just don't like it at all. For instance, a friend of mine hates it because they were both spoiled about everything from a friend of theirs who was obsessed over it and was given completely unreal expectations of the show, so she watched it and just... despises it with a passion. And then another person I know just... doesn't like it because she thought everything in it was for "shock value" or was a "cop-out" for some weird "greater potential" that she made up and doesn't make any sense in terms of the series, but related heavily to what she likes to watch in fiction. Yet another friend of mine watched a really misleading negative review of the series and gave up on it long before he was "forced" to watch it by his anime club, in which he barely paid attention to it and echoed the construed views of the review to me. They're all still friends of mine (one is my best friend), but it's impossible to make them understand anything other than what they already believe when their bias is so strong...

I've yet to find someone who understands the series enough to talk about its story elements properly, yet still hates it. :/

I've seen quite a few people say it's overrated and that sort of stuff...

Also my one of best friends hates it but fore different reasons. I showed him episode 3 and he ended up being terrified of Charlotte. Which is surprising as he's a huge horror movie fan.

On the flipside, people I've shown it to have told me it was "surprisingly good." or "not as shitty as I thought it would be."

Madoka subverts your expectations repeatedly, and yet fits together perfectly by the end. I think most of the people who hate it (and yes, they definitely exist) were put off by the genre and/or genre-twisting, and were too confused by the whole thing to really understand it.

I still don't know how I'd rate the Madoka movies compared to the series. As far as I can tell, they actually changed surprisingly little at first glance--that is, most of the scenes are there, the lines are the same, and so on--but the general feel is very different. (They did cut the dream sequence from the beginning, which... seriously?) The entire script was re-acted, with many parts portrayed differently, for better or worse. Much of the music was changed, seemingly adding more variety, but less overall quality and some weird bombasticness (the track they used when "that" happens to Sayaka was especially jarring). Production values are cranked up, which in some places looks better, and in others is distracting.

Generally, the movies feel more epic and "cinematic" (duh) but, somewhat inevitably, it loses some of its ominousness and ability to draw you into its twisted world and empathize with the characters. The movie version seems more accessible, easier to get someone to watch, but a bit less effective. Which is probably exactly what they were aiming for, come to think of it.

Nozaki-kun is the first anime comedy I've seen that actually feels... like a comedy. You know, people with weird personalities playing off each other, comedic timing, and so on; instead of random things happening plus silly reaction faces, which seems to be the standard formula for anime comedy. And it had enough of a plot thread (tangle?) going that I couldn't wait to watch the next episode, another rare thing in comedy shows, at least for me. The ending was the classic bait-and-switch, but it made sense in context and gave the impression that there might be something more to it. I sure hope there's a continuation, at least...

I am sure that there are any number of people who simply don't like magical girl type shows and thus hate the show because it is not about subject matter that they enjoy. Madoka is a great show, but it is not the Borg. Resistance is not futile.

Every time the end credits roll, I'm overcome with sadness, because I wanted to spend more time with those goofballs. Character-driven comedy hasn't been this involving since Azumanga Daioh, or maybe Genshiken.
EDIT: just noticed the title joke. Well played, Bamboo.
