I confess I'm still pissed off at Viz for cancelling the series just before it was due to end, and knowing that there's hardly any scanlations available for it makes really upset as it's one of my favorite manga in recent years.
It's crap like this that's made me hate Viz a lot in the past few years... |

I enjoyed the first few volumes of Inubaka, but I gave up on it when it started to be more about the dogs and less about the girl. I really did like her, but I am just not a dog person.
It seems that there are some things that happen later that I would enjoy. If any of my local libraries have this I will probably try reading some more. |

I MISS THIS SERIES SO MUCH!
It is one of the very few series that I bought the manga of much less all of them. I can count series I have done that for on one hand! I am still very upset at viz as well for cutting the series off right when it was reach the end. You would think they could do two onibus releases and finish the series off, but no they had to kill it and not release it. That is why I dislike viz Almost as much as tokyopop because they both constantly pulled stuff like this. |

The Shiba is the top Japanese breed by registration while the Akita is the most famous Japanese breed(in the US, Akitas has been popular than the Shiba by AKC stats), the top Japanese breed for size is the Tosa Inu (bred for doggy sumo wrestling and a Mastiff-type breed that has been used by the Yakuza).

Sounds like something I may enjoy. Not being a dog owner currently, I do do some dog sitting every once in awhile. Though, knowing it got cancelled means I won't end up reading this.
The pictures look nice... |

I looove this manga. This is the first time I've ever seen it acknowledged outside of my bookshelves. I never had a chance to read it as much as I would've liked, and it's a shame to hear that Viz canceled it.

So that's what happened. Damn, I really loved this series too. I have every volume in English and had been wondering why things went quiet for so long. Man, I need to read more online feeds or something. =/

Great article on a good read. I sure did enjoy looking forward to each new volume as it was released. Though some times it was more information about dogs than I wanted! If it wasn't selling, I am not sure what else VIZ could have done but stop publishing it. It is what I would have done.
However, I can say that I am more careful about my manga purchases now because of Inubaka. Seventeen volumes is a major investment by the reader as well (in both time and money). I think it was the last VIZ title I purchased. I will probably look into Nisekoi, Deadman Wonderland, and others at some point - but all volumes will need to have been printed before I buy the first one. (I would have let the dog poop in the car) |

Nisekoi is doing very well for Viz which is surprising given their patchy history with rom coms. Each volume seems to spend a couple of weeks on the NYT bestsellers list so I can't see them dropping it. Although I can definitely understand your hesitation. (Plus sometimes it's nice to have a stack of volumes rather than having to wait months between releases!) |

CallumKeyblade, while what you say might be true, I think some of their more successful rom coms would be Kenshin and Ranma 1/2.

I don't think Kenshin counts at all. It has romance, but its mainly a Shonen Jump action title. Those usually sell. |

I can understand the idea of wanting the manga series to be finished/close to finishing before jumping onto it. I did it, most recently, with the Mayo Chiki manga, bought all 7 volumes when the 7th and final volume was released by Seven Seas. And, though different, I've also jumped on Sankarea and Inu x Boku SS. I say it's different because I jumped onto those series when I heard they were finishing up in Japan, so I believe both will see their ends printed in the west. But, when it comes to most a new manga series' debut, it's kind of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. You help dictate whether or not a newly licensed series continues to see print in the west. But, what's worse is that it's really the Japanese audience that dictates on if a series you follow sees its intended end. Since I don't really buy that many series that are currently ongoing in Japan, I don't mind running the risk of one not seeing its intended ending. I'm currently on 5, so I don't mind taking a hit or two. If I were getting 10 or so series, I'd be picky with which ongoings I'd be buying. And, since it looks like I might only be adding a few more ongoings next year, I'm still not at the point where I'll be more strict on this. I don't have any qualms with getting a series that is a new license, but has finished its run in Japan. |
