Y'know I find this funny that we just did a whole column on OVAs and the Tenchi craze, and now here comes more. I guess there more to tell. Someone said years ago that the creator was going to continue fleshing out the story as long as he could. I wonder if it's true. Have we gotten the answers we all had been asking?

Kajishima, honey, no. I know this is your creation, but you've run it into the ground.

I figured as much. Though I will admit it's had more spinoffs than any other series.

I get Ai Tenchi Muyo is supposed to be some tourism boost and fellatio for a city, but I can't even get that out of the show. There's almost nothing that says "Come to this city and see the sights, drop a lot of dosh."

That was Kajishima's problem. Spinning to many plates at a time. In the end they all come crashing down.

Kajishima is writing the manga? I get the feeling that may be a translation error, and he's merely being credited as Original Creator. Either that, or Hell just froze over.

Aside from clarifying in one of his dojinshi a few months back that he had no involvement with the Ai Tenchi anime, he has never-ever, not once even acknowledged the existence of any Tenchi anime that he wasn't directly involved in (i.e. The OVA continuity).

He didn't talk about Universe, Tokyo, the movies, the Sasami spinoffs, anything, which is why I'm kinda finding it hard to believe that he may be so heavily involved with this manga. But if it is true, that's a pretty big deal, and I'd be curious to learn how AIC coerced him into it.

They name-drop locations in the city every few episodes, but aside from that, yeah, they're not all in-your-face about it.

Honestly, I'm impressed with what I've seen so far. I was expecting little more than an infomercial starring Tenchi characters. But it's an honest-to-goodness show with a progressing story and entertaining characters, and only the faintest hints at it's "tourism" roots.

from the looks of things, it might be the case. also hopefully the decision of a manga might change the committee's mind on having the series only 5 mins long and i wont be surprised if it does. dont forget those in charge of tenchi muyo war in geminar made changes too. it was originally meant to be a 26 TV series but change it to a 50 min 13 ep OVA instead. so it could happen.especially if the anime series will be extremely faithful towards the manga.

What OVA continuation? The only manga I know of were the "No Need For Tenchi", and "The All New Tenchi Muyo". Even though they are listed as "sequels" here in the Encyclopaedia here, they were actually just a retelling of the original OVA and an alternative universe tacked on the end with "All New" both written and drawn by Okuda Hitoshi under licence from Kajishima and AIC. He had to quit drawing it when OVA 3 was about to be released. Though Kajishima gave it his blessing, he had, nor gave no other hand with them.

Kajishima-sensei had nothing to do with all the spinoffs (which I know you know this, since you are a LONG time Tenchi fan like me). After OVA2, AIC and Pioneer saw the popularity of Hasegawa-sensei's spinoff novels, tested the waters with Mihoshi Special, then the floodgates got opened on spinoffs and their continuities.

Just to do OVA 3, AIC had him to GXP first. That TV series had to be a success before they'd green light OVA 3, which also had to be a success before they'd let him do the series he really wanted to do, which ended becoming War on Geminar.

Ai Tenchi Muyo is nothing to do with Kajishima, but it is everything to do with Negishi, which is probably while it will ultimately be part of the Tenchi Universe continuity.

As to Ai Tenchi Muyo getting a manga adaptation, I guess it proves that the Tenchi brand is still a cash cow for AIC. I'm still surprised no one in the U.S. legally simulcast it.

If he'd only stuck to his "Shin Tenchi" novels instead of going off on all those side stories. Such a wasted opportunity I doubt he'll ever get again. So sad. Rolling Eyes

Actually the Mihoshi Special came out in 1994 (which is right here on ANN) a full 5 months before the first episode of OVA2 aired, but yes it was created because of how popular Hasegawa's first novels were. the first of which came out in 1993

It's funny you say that ANB, because you have always proclaimed that Kajishima had a 3 contract deal from the get go with AIC, so which is it? Was it a show by show basis? or was the deal all at once? And where exactly does it say that he HAD to do GXP first? That doesn't make a lot of sense.

That is correct, however being a pilot It was tacked on to the end of the early VHS release of OVA 2(which I still have) as a "bonus". Being OVAs from the start I don't think they were firstly televised and it popularity, and sales, prompted AIC to want to do a TV series. Kajishima wanted to continue with the OVAs and that's where he and AIC had parted ways, forcing Miura to commission Hesagawa's fanfic novels, hense "Tenchi Universe" etc. instead.

Kajishima said it in his "interview" that he would do GXP first before carrying on with the OVA.

Two points.

1. I can't stand when people criticize someone for what he does with his own property. Its the same thing with Star Wars. It is/was Lucas' intellectual property and he had the right to do whatever he wanted, and you should just have been grateful that you got what you did. But the fans start acting like someone created a non existent law that know makes it their property. Same with Tenchi. Although IMO especially with Geminar, I think the original ova continuity is still great.

2. I will take any Tenchi because that will keep the franchise alive, and as long as its alive ova 4 and geminar are always possible.

3. New girls plus old girls, win win.

Where do you guys ever get the popularity of the Hasegawa Novels from? I think you're all drinking too much Koolaid.

Her books have no ratings on amazon. Two out of 3 MK's True Tenchi Novels have more reviews than her entire 13 novel TM series combined.

No, the Mihoshi Special came out on March 24, 1994, 6 months after the release of Night of the Carnival (the first post-OAV1 TM anime release) on September 25, 1993. NotC was the big success that drove more products, not the single novel no Japanese fans talk about.

That's like saying the TM101 (released released May 30, 1994) made OAV2 possible because it came four months before OAV2 (ep8). Hey, it has more amazon ratings than any single Hasegawa novel, theory holds!

Ridiculous.

BTW, every Tenchi release had a retelling in one format or another. Par for the course. Even the TV series had a horrible TV Comics which were just grainy screenshots printed with dialogue. Really bad.
