This is a pretty big event... Well, good luck for all parts involved in the project, and of course, the animators.

I think...hope rather that we're going to see more of this going indie and trying to promote an environment for freedom of expression cause right now more than ever anime needs it as a medium to stay culturally relevant beyond just the obvious otaku appeal. Things can't really go on the way they've been going on and it's great that we're seeing an increase in what I could have only hoped of in my dreams, an attempt to go a little more independent from the big conglomerate publishers and do something like this where it's about artistic expression and training new animators for the future rather than just trying to make a quick buck and maintaining the status quo.
Never did I dream something that looks this big might happen as a response to the current commercialization of anime and lack of planning for the future. Obviously there's some big influences like Miyazaki and Anno that care about where things are headed and that something will be lost when it comes to Japanese animation if they don't take action now. 30 works eventually though.....I don't know if they can realistically keep that up, but if they do it'll be something to see. |

Eh, they're just shorts, so I imagine things that are 5-10 minutes. It's good training for animators and allows to explore their short story ideas, but things like these almost never capture the attention of people not fully ingrained in anime to begin with, i.e. Genius Party, Amazing Nuts, or practically anything Studio 4C has done.

I watch a lot of indie animation which usually comes in the format of shorts, and I can tell that you that even within that limited time-frame, talented people can express a lot. So yeah, this is pretty great news for me. |

There is a really interesting kickstarter for a five minute, hand-drawn short by Keiichiro Kimura, who was the animation director/character designer for Cyborg 009 and Tiger Mask. He was also a key animator for Speed Racer and Lupin the Third. I really like his style of motion, and he plans to draw every frame by hand. The story seems to center around a samurai and an endless battle. There are not too many details yet, but I'm keeping an eye on it. Here's the link:

Maijo Otaru as a director? He's already made something of a name for himself as a novelist. I haven't read any of this stuff, but I do remember translator Andrew Cunningham raving about his books over on The Eastern Standard blog. Sounded like pretty crazy stuff, so this might be interesting.
