I'd love to see Senya Ichiya Monogatari and Cleopatra restored on BD first, but this article doesn't say whether it's HD or not but theater releases make me believe that's the case. Those other two films may have some stunning DVD releases, but BD would only be another step in seeing them maybe get some attention.

A big inspiration for Ikuhara. Never thought it would be licensed. And it has Tatsuya Nakadai! I'm excited!
Will this be the oldest anime released on blu-ray (in the United States?) if and when it comes out? |

Belladonna of Sadness is a very stylised and abstract film. I don't know how many people would enjoy it beyond those that appreciate film festival material. Mainstream it is not, not even in anime fandom.

I believe the first Patlabor OVAs are currently the oldest anime on BD in the US. Belladonna is 15 years older than those. |

Not quite. Nausicaa(1984), by Miyazaki, has been released by Disney on Bluray in US, narrowing the gap to 11 years. Had Discotek already released Miyazaki's previous film, Castle of Cagliostro(1979), on Bluray, the gap would only have been 6 years... (They plan to release the DVD this year, with Bluray for it coming at a later date.) Still, 1973 is a pretty hard date to beat... |

Not if they release the two films I mentioned earlier, from 1969 and 1970 respectively. Or if someone got wild and releases Horus: Prince of the Sun from 1968 that would claim it since it's unlikely any older TV series or film would be bothered with. |

I've always wanted to see this film. It's amazing that they are actually going to do a release of it in America. I've never heard of Cinelicous, but they are also doing a release of Gangs of Wasseypur, which is pretty cool too.

Good news but i did already have this dvd in German and Japanese and there wasn't anything wrong with the picture or anything so why this one ? Maybe because it's so bizarre.
But i will definitely pick up a US release well i have to support all attempts at releasing Tezuka stuff in English when it does actually come out wich is almost never it feels like. One thing has to be sad about Tezuka's actuall involvement in this movie though. It is only based on some of his designs he stepped down as boss of Mushi pro in 1971 this came out in 1973 !!! |

There doesn't have to be anything wrong with the picture to give it an HD remaster, it's just forward progress.

Exactly. You can have a perfectly fine and clean DVD picture, but a good HD remaster will still look much better. The image will be much sharper, the backgrounds more detailed. |

And hopefully you'll see the grain of the original film negative, just like you would in theaters.
