Not as much as the America in the 90's would have been.

Pretty Much. It's not the kind of game that appeals as much to kids here anymore. It will gain some followers, but it'll look like every other thing on the shelf unless they really push the secondary content onto big networks and such again. Which won't likely happen anymore. I don't mind my prediction being wrong, but I really don't think it'll hit universal Pokemon levels of excitement, even if it's overtaken Pokemon in Japan right now.

And Pokemon seems like it'll still last the test of time for quite a while more. Youkai Watch may just spell its own doom by giving other kid's properties a method in which to shine alongside it. Its jump in popularity came at the perfect interval for Japanese kids, and in the next few years, I can see another interval opening up once the initial Youkai Watch audience has grown up a bit.

Yugioh, Beyblade, and Bakugan have all fallen off in the US and I would like to think there is an opening for a new franchise besides Pokemon. Youkai Watch doesn't seem to have the "cool" factor though. Most of the characters and monsters are more goofy looking than they are cool.

I don't know what kids like these days so maybe it could work.

Too late; they've been out for months Wink Nothing too fancy, but they're cute enough I suppose. The merchandising insanity has reached the toilet paper level so really, what else is left?

I think Youkai Watch's success in Japan is a blending of what made Pokemon and what made Crayon Shin-chan a success.

It's got the collectible, battle thing going for it, PLUS it has the "parents think it's stupid" and "irreverent comedy" thing going for it.

Since cranyon shin-chan like shows basically never work in the west, I just can't see it taking off here...
Like, I'm not one for westernization, but this is a perfect case where US kids just won't get 100% of the humor in Yokai Watch. Maybe like ~60% they'll get. There's just not enough left for it to work here, and any attempt to rewrite it would be faced with extreme difficulty just because of its nature. Bad puns aside, no one is going to get half of the extended parody segments...

I can see the game doing relatively well, like Ace Attorney well. But the next pokemon? I can't see it, even if it did air on TV somehow.

I doubt that, I don't think it's marketable outside of Japan.

This might be a crazy idea, but we could always teach our kids about other cultures for a change rather than trying to hide everything from them Laughing Kids aren't as dumb as people think they are.

Well as I said, I don't think it's marketable in the US, there's too much Japanese culture little kids may not understand. Pokemon work because well, there wasn't too much Japanese culture and the content found in Pokemon is understood universally.

I remember a while back Level 5 was asking if people wanted Youkai Watch in NA/Overseas.
I'd love to have it, but I'm afraid what would happen if it was to come over here. Neutral

If it turns out anything like that episode of Doraemon that was dubbed (I can't remember the number) I'd be ok with it.
