A family friendly dub? That's not the type of thing I'd expect from Lupin (especially with him lusting after Fujiko).

This is a Miyazaki movie, and the man was on record saying he wanted to make an "accessible" Lupin film. The family-friendly dub edit is, I think, a perfectly valid addition. Of course, it was my idea, so....

As long as we get the David Hayter dub, all is good.

I lost my -ish. I thought we were getting a new dub with the Pioneer cast.

I'm glad it's going to include two sets of subtitles, it'll be interesting to see how they differ.

The Manga Dub they did for the DVD release added a whole bunch of gratuitous swearing that wasn't (as far as I know) in the original script. As I understand it, the family friendly dub cleans up and removes (or minimizes) that swearing.

Because while Lupin is still an adult show, Cagliostro is a reasonably harmless example, one that you should be able to show kids without Jigen dropping S-Bombs

I asked Reed Nelson personally about the "Family Friendly" dub, and this is what he told me:

Reed wrote:
Made for the Discotek DVD/Blu-ray. it's the Manga dub...it's in 2.0 w/almost no cursing.

Reed wrote:
Okay, yeah, the track started as an unofficial pet project of mine back in 2007

He also told me a few extra "secrets" about the dub, but I was sworn to secrecy, so you're just gonna have to find out about those on your own. Wink

The thing about the Family Edit is that by way of removing the profanity it makes it more accurate to the original script. The movie is very family friendly and I think a lot of people took pause with the original version of the 2000 dub because there was so much swearing.

It's akin to the Ghibli redits they did to Kiki and Castle in the Sky which make them closer to the original, though we included the original version with all the swearing in 5.1 just so you can pick your poison so to speak.

Every time I've ever shown Manga's original dub version to friends and family, especially ones who weren't all too used to anime, they almost always had the same comment --- "it's a good movie, though I was thrown off by all the swearing". TBH, that's how I also felt when I first saw the movie myself years and years ago (though I thought it was more than good, it's an amazing movie), so it's actually nice to see a more faithful, family-friendly version of the dub being created for this set, it gives more incentive to pick up the movie a third time (that, along with the Streamline dub).

Seems they're running a bit behind. The DVD was originally announced for August with the Blu-Ray following by the end of the year. Kind of a bummer since I've been waiting for the Blu-Ray. Oh well, I'll get it when it's done.

Yes, we postponed it. It's all in the efforts of a better release. With the cost of doing Blu-Ray you get pretty much just one shot at it, so we want to make sure it's done right.

In fact, the movie was reportedly a flop in Japan for making Lupin G (for Ghibli)-rated.
In the scene where Clarisse gives Lupin a little-sister hug, we get his brief reaction of "Must...control...hands... Shocked ", but he wins the battle. Obviously Hayao's influence.

(And he wasn't the only one getting a Miyazaki whitewashing: In his episodes and Castle, Miyazaki always seemed to tone down Fujiko from a double-crossing femme-fatale golddigger to a smart and resourceful secret agent who might be doing a little stealing in her spare time....I had a 9-yo. niece who loved the character from Cagliostro, and I didn't have the heart to tell her the ugly truth.)

Well, Fujiko did spend one of Miyazaki's episodes of the second TV series not wearing any underwear.

Eric: They hated it in Japan for different reasons. And there are still die-hard Lupin fans who hate it.

Gonna need a source to buy that. The film is a beloved classic over here, often shown on TV. Almost everyone has at least heard of it. Throughout the 1980s, Clarisse usually appeared somewhere in Animage's top 10 female character polls as well.

Actually, Reed talks about it in his commentary. When it came out it wasn't very popular, not doing well at the box office. It only gained its popularity later-on.
