He graduated from Meiji University's School of Commerce and joined Toei in 1995 as part of Toei's second round of "New Face" talent.

That should read "1955".

Anyway, RIP.

Sad to hear he passed I thought he was a great actor. In fact I just ordered and received Black Rain on Blu-Ray haven't seen the movie in many years going to try to watch it ASAP now.

Didn't think he was that old, boy does time pass I remember watching Black Rain when I was a little kid in theaters. He was also in Mr Baseball a kind of fun movie as well.

It's not the only live-action Golgo 13, just the '73 one. There was also one with Sonny Chiba from '77.

Great actor. He was terrific in "The Yellow Handkerchief" and also "The Voice of the Distant Mountains" (two very similar movies directed by Yoji Yamada). He'll be missed.

Edit: He also co-starred with Robert Mitchum in "The Yakuza."

I just heard this on NHK World Radio Japan news today about how many fans of his gather to say farewell, Here's the article from NHK World, I'll quote the whole article because anything from NHK World is not archived and doesn't last long:

NHK World wrote:

Ken Takakura fans gather in Tokyo to say farewell

Fans of the late actor Ken Takakura are lining up at movie theaters in Tokyo to lay flowers and bid farewell.

Takakura died of malignant lymphoma on November 10th at the age of 83. He appeared in 205 films, including a blockbuster yakuza series that made him an icon of the genre. His career spanned more than half-a-century.

Film company Toei erected altars to the star on Wednesday at 2 theaters, one in the Ginza shopping and entertainment district. Toei produced many of Takakura's films, including the yakuza gang story "Prison Walls of Abashiri."

A billboard message at the Ginza theater thanks the veteran actor. Posters and scripts of his films "Railroad Man" and "Firefly" are also on display.

"Railroad Man" in 1999 won Takakura a best actor award at the Montreal World Film Festival in Canada.

People started lining up at the theatres hours in advance to pay their respects. A woman in her 30s said she went to the same high school as Takakura. She said she had great respect for the late actor and will miss him very much.
