Oh, I remember Animax Latin America! Back when I was a kid I saw tidbits of anime in Spanish like The Count of Monte Cristo, Uninhabited Planet Survive(my favorite back then), Blood + (boy was that an uncomfortable experience when I was a kid), FMA 2003, HunterxHunter(90's version), The Cowboy Bebop movie(dubbed English with Spanish subtitles), I'm Gonna Be An Angel, Burst Angel, neon Genesis Evangelion, Cardcaptor Sakura, Yu Yu Hakusho, Death Note, etc. Man, now that I think about I believe that's what got me really into anime in the days following.

Just wanted to say this column has done us all a service with its takedown of hate campaigns and how destructive and worthless and born of ignorance it all really is. That message about finding things and people to support instead of villains to hate and nitpick to death is just pitch perfect and valuable, so thanks for delivering it.

It's always seemed the only big street date enforcement any ever made a stink over was for the Harry Potter books. Otherwise it's just an issue the companies need to resolve between themselves and the customer would never notice or care.

Justin explains life to a shallow burnout. In the end you will realize that, none of it mattered to begin with. This is all a simple luxury not a necessity. Hurting a dub actor must be one hell of a life goal.

Wow, I find this week Answerman to be very interesting to read.

Regarding Alternating translated and romaji subtitles for opening and ending themes (Matthew's question): I think having romaji subtitles is useful for anyone that is learning Japanese. So yes I'm in favor for alternating subtitles for opening and ending themes.

Regarding Animax (invalidname's question): Animax used to be very big back in early 2000, but Animax started to withdraw from most of the market outside of Asia since 2010.

Animax withdraw from South Africa

Animax Latin America RIP

And now just early of this year, it's been announced that Animax will cease broadcast in Spain. Animax's European presence is only UK and Germany. Animax still active in North America, Australia, and all of Asia.

Regarding Juliana's question: I have nothing to say about that.

My biggest beef is what I read out of Julia's question: OK, I'm getting a bit fed up with all the anti-Vic Mignogna bashing that's been happening on this thread recently. The change.org petition was just ridiculous and also very paranoid.

Once you say something wrong, no matter how harmless, it seems like people can find virtually any justification to attack you. And they do it with passion, and viciousness. That's a new thing. People didn't used to try and enact "revenge" like this at the drop of a hat, against a total stranger. It's terrifying, and it's sickening.

Otherwise, can't say I disagree with Justin's response; kudos.

unfortunately the dub versions of animax are god awful bad. epsecially animax asia. it had such a bad rep it would have be easily considered the worst dubbing company in the otaku community if it wasn't for the horror that was 4kids.

He is specifically referring to internet hate campaigns designed to destroy someone's livelihood - attacking the way they make a living, attempting to influence their employers, trying to deny them the ability to continue - for opinions allegedly expressed.

It is a recent development.

That whole thread was hilarious and sad.I understand not liking a voice actor's work, but the lengths people were going to in that thread were just ridiculous.

I met Vic Mignogna at SoonerCon last year (in the autograph line), and he seemed nice enough to me, for what it's worth.

This seems as good a place as any to tell a story i have from this year's Youmacon (i moved to Michigan a few months ago, and was lucky enough to attend the convention). I brought some anime stuff for voice actors to sign, and one of my targets was Todd Haberkorn, who directed and starred in the english dub of my favorite anime ever, Claymore. Little did i know just how insanely popular and in demand he was.

I waited for a full hour and 45 minutes in line to get his autograph (out of a 2 hour autograph slot), and quite honestly i started to feel a bit sorry for him. When i got towards the front, i could plainly tell that he wasn't simply smiling, signing, then moving on; he was taking the time to have a unique, small conversation with each person in line. When he got to me (a bearded 25 year old guy), even though he must have talked to at least 150 people beforehand, he took the time to ask about where i was from, my reason for moving to michigan (a job), etc., until i felt i had to be the one to break it off because there were still a ton of people behind me. It was pretty clear that he was willing to stay longer than the allotted two hours, and seemed pretty frazzled and drained by the time i got to him. I just wanted to say that i'm impressed with how accommodating he was to his fans, and am grateful that he wanted to give each fan his or her special moment.

It wasn't just Mr. Haberkorn, either; every other VA i got to meet was as nice and pleasant as could be. Caitlin Glass, Ian Sinclair, Joel McDonald, Tia Ballard, and Tony Oliver (just to name some) were very nice to me, and seemed like the greatest people. Admittedly, all of them are actors, but my experiences like the one with Mr. Haberkorn above convinced me that those weren't acts.

I guess my conclusion is that my experiences with VAs, including Vic Mignogna, has been overwhelmingly positive, and i'm glad that so many of them hit up conventions and take time to meet their fans. Also, shout out to Team Four Star, LittleKuriboh, and Linkara, who were all about 10 times as nice and awesome in person than i expected.

Zac, you're going to have to take my word on this one since I don't have access to the archival data, but I distinctly remember supporters of a certain presidential candidate in 2004 finding "dox" (before it was called that) on supporters of the opposing candidate and finding ways of getting them fired. It's not that it's new, it's that it's simply more noticeable in the age of widespread social media. If Justin is talking about the notability of it being new, then yes, I believe that would be correct. However, to even imagine that this kind of behavior, even online behavior is new would be to assign the early Internet a kind of misplaced innocence that resembles nostalgia.

The romaji/English subtitling deal is a good demonstration of how people have strongly differing preferences in how their anime is adapted. I can't imagine wanting anything other than both at the same time: I want the translation and I want to be able to sing along. Other people want to see both but don't want the screen cluttered, so Funimation's alternating subs is preferable. Others don't care about the romaji at all, and some people just want a clean screen without subs.

tl;dr english/romaji/kana fansubs with unreadable text effects are best subs.

i think several releases, at least with funimation, have a clean opening and closing included as a special feature. I know that the Claymore bluray does, at least

Ah, Vic. My contempt for him doesn't lay on so much on his inappropriate comments and mannerisms (panel with included church sermon at a con? What a deal!), but in his ubiquity as a one trick pony as a voice actor imo.

You really wanna lay it thick to "prove" your point? Tell your grievances to the man himself rather than hiding behind a monitor like some keyboard warrior. Who knows? You might even get respect from Vic for telling it how it is and not being one of his brown nosers. Not the smartest move you can make, but it certainly gutsier than what you're trying to pull.
