Pretty crappy numbers for a Ghibli movie that cost fifty million dollars. Otherwise seems like an off week as far as sales are concerned.

I think Frozen is going to stay on the Blu ray chart in japan forever. Smile

Also, what a bomb Legend of Sanctuary turned out to be for Toei. Not even BD sales could save it.

I was one of those who bought the Kaguya blu-ray, actually. Sadly, i'm, not surprised to say I7ve seen basically no advertisement for the movie over here in Japan and that hardly anyone seems to know about it. I had a little viewing party, though, and everyone really loved it.

*saw Princess Kaguya's number*

I'm pretty surprised about the low number (and I do share the same sentiment as walw6pK4Alo) despite winning 2 critics awards from the US.

Those awards have nothing to do with sales numbers in Japan, they barely have anything to do with sales numbers in America either. It can win all of the prestigious little animation awards it wants, it can even take the Golden Globe, but the Academy Award is the only one the general populace will ever care about. Winning that could give it a shot at seeing some sort of wider release instead of the limited arthouse circuit.

I started to lose faith on to the Academy Awards since their judging system has been questioned which include Oscar baiting. I rather stick to Golden Globes since they have a better judging system.

Princess Kaguya should never have cost US$50m to make. That amount is absurd for an animated movie out of Japan. The three producers should hang their heads in shame for greenlighting that much funding.

Look, I like Isao Takahata and his body of work a lot; far more than Hayao Miyazaki and his films. But he's never been as commercially successful as Miyazaki, he isn't a household name and his films have been low-key.

Princess Kaguya has made just two-thirds of the gross in Japanese theatres as Spirited Away did, and the latter cost just forty percent of the former to make. So Spirited Away made more money with a much smaller budget.

While Princess Kaguya could still rake in money overseas like Spirited Away did, I very much doubt that it will. If I'm right, that leaves home video sales as the only other major source of revenue . . . and the numbers have been incredibly weak for a family-friendly film by a much-beloved studio.

Studio executives everywhere seem to be under this illusion that to make a really good film - and especially a profitable one - you have to throw vast sums of money at it. That's simply not the case at all.

That's fine, many people put no stock into the Academy Awards, but they still hold sway with moneymaking and marketing.

Ponyo 201.75 Mil WW
Wind Rises 117.8 Mil WW
Howl's Moving Castle 235 M
Spirited Away 274.9 Mil
Tales from the Earthsea 68 Mil
From Up on Poppy 61 Mil
Mononoke 159 Mil

I don't know if you noticed, or if you are just one of those that considers box office as referring only to the US, but most Ghibli movies make 100 million plus world wide, with even the lesser ones like Poppy and Earthsea breaking 60 million. So a budget of 50 is not completely out of the realm of reason, especially given this is one of the last ghibli films. And that is not even taking into account home video release sales. Hell imagine they are getting a nice boost from those double dipping on the new blu ray releases of the older Ghibli films.

Dangit, it should be a crime for Princess Kaguya to recieve such paltry sales (well, for a Ghibli film anyway)! This film needs an Academy Award nomination so a bit of the ignorant masses will notice and hopefully watch it. It deserves to be seen because its a beautiful film. Its a shame that so many so called Ghibli "fans" and even people in Japan arent even aware of this film's existance. And the budget is justified because the film looks absolutely gorgeous. It is also one of Joe Hisaishi's best soundtracks.

I can happily say that I contributed to those poor sales, even if it ultimately didn't help it that much.
