I find it amusing that they find Twin-tail's plot mcguffin as a "worst series concept" when it is blatantly calling out magical girl/sentai hero series in regards to villains seeking rather bizarre forms of magical McGuffin.

Yes, in all cases it can be silly in that a magical girls series they are looking for "true friendship shards" or in sentai they are looking for "hearts of darkness", but that aspect in particuler shouldn't be the cited "this is too stupid to watch" reason for quitting twin tail when the main source of McGuffin is "twin-tail attribute".

I knew I wasn't crazy when I kept playing Hanayamata just to see the opening Smile

No need; anime is loaded with moé and loli so it's pretty easy to find Wink

The name of the opening song of Rage of Bahamut is "EXISTENCE", not "EXCELLENCE".

I usually don't comment in the Anime in America articles but, I have to comment on this.
Quote:
Runner-Up: DAIGO as Shogo, Love Stage!!)

DAIGO was the only VA in 2014 who was pretty bad in Love Stage!. His delivery was stilted and felt very forced. It was more noticeable around other popular VAs like Daisuke Hirakawa as Rei. Granted, perhaps that's what makes his role so memorable (in a bad way) since usually I never complain about Japanese VAs since most actors are reused or typecast in certain character roles. He was still pretty funny though as the 'overprotective brother'.

I have to finish Rage of Bahamut: Genesis as "Most Under-appreciated Show" but I'm glad Rebecca kept mentioning The World is Still Beautiful because I didn't expect to like it so much when I saw it earlier in 2014. In the "For the Ladies", I would add Orenchi no Furo Jijo (more specifically episodes 3 and 6).

Yes, it is entirely possible that many anime were left out.

well thought out stuff, and it seems like i need to watch both Yona and Yuna, lol. It's too bad that Tokyo Ghoul didn't get more love here, but i understand; it can be a hard series to watch at times, but i at least loved it.

Glad to see some shout-outs to Noragami and World is Still Beautiful; i enjoyed those shows too Smile

Amagi at least is disqualified from the "in America" requirement, so it couldn't have been considered anyway.

Good article, with this nice nugget:

A keeper quote from Rebecca, thank you very much Madam.

I always enjoy these year-enders, and Rebecca is a great addition as a recliner-mate. Also, because my interests also seem to line up closely with Theron's; I also had the Wake Up, Girls! movie atop my Top 5 (and Yuki Yuna Is A Hero might make that list now that I'm catching up on it). Two minor follow-ups for Theron, then:

  1. Wouldn't a Roku solve your Funimation-on-the-big-TV problem? That platform has official apps for both Crunchyroll and Funimation
  2. Thanks for the reminder of how eventful Anime Central 2014 was, between the Sailor Moon announcement and Wake Up, Girls! concert. ACen seems to get overlooked from all the attention paid to AX and Otakon, but any convention with the sense to mail out badges in advance rather than making attendees queue up for hours on end deserves our appreciation. Would love to say hi IRL if you're there next year.

See EmperorBrandon's note about Amagi. I, at least, mentioned Zankyou and Space Dandy in my more detailed comments in the linked Top 5 article (at least why I wasn't giving them any love, anyway), and SD was mentioned as an "also considered" in the Best Episode award. Akame ga Kill did get an award for Biggest Bastard, but it didn't really excel at anything else of note except killing characters, and I would challenge anyone to look at its death scenes and tell me honestly that any of them are better, more significant, and/or more impactful than the two I named. Same with Tokyo Ghoul. Neither of us apparently watched out Barakamon (I tried, but it bored me).

For anyone else wishing to offer alternatives or comment on what they think was missed, going into a bit of detail about it rather than just tossing off a one-liner is preferable and expected.

EDIT: Didn't see invalidname's post before posting this.

It would, but it would also be an additional expense that I shouldn't have to have for a TV specifically set up to do this, especially since I have apps for CR and Manga Entertainment (of all companies) that work just fine.

  • Will mostly likely be there next year, so we'll see if something can't be worked out.

Mushishi's the only real contender for anime of the year in my mind. Ping Pong is close behind, though. The best anime film overall I saw in 2014 and best locally-released title are both Ghibli movies: Marnie and Kaguya, respectively.

Was LWA only released in the US this year? I got the BD in 2013, and I thought that was how people got it. It was reviewed on ANN and everything.

I agree that Trinity Seven had a sharp decline in quality where seeming potential went up in smoke, though I'd draw that line at halfway through the first episode.

I also agree totally with Rebecca's giving Love Live! an award for Snow Halation. I generally view concert scenes as something that just happen, but this one was special, probably the best I've seen since Haruhi and co. performed God Knows... back in 2006.
