Man, after sitting yesterday and reading comments on Amazon about Book of Life and Boxtrolls, there really must be some hate going on for those films. Parents who streamed it thought it was just disgusting and consumers were like, it's visually nice but poor in other areas. Or it it doesn't live up to quality pieces like 'Coraline'. Personally I haven't seen either of these films yet. I'm waiting to see them on DVD once we get our copies in. Plus, I want to check out the 'Lego Movie' as well. We have it but everyone else at my job that has children have coveted the film for themselves. And we haven't had a chance to get it into circulation yet. There was a article in the NY Post last week on the animation awards and some critic was annoyed that the 'Lego Movie' didn't get the love it deserves. Not to mention voicing his disdain for the other films including 'Kaguya', stating they were utter "crap". Hmm, must be one of those guys that hates ANI-MAY. LOL. But I can see where he's coming from. The Lego Movie was like something that touched the hearts of those who grew up with and still enjoy the nostalgia of toys. The same way that 'Toy Story' did for so many viewers when that came out. The Lego Movie was like a dream come true. Who would have every thought someone would have decided to make a "stop motion" film using legos. Plus, it was the film of the summer and it was well done visually.

I've heard good things about 'Big Hero 6' and I want to see it. I just wish it was being released this month instead of Feb. But again customers are pissed off at Disney for not giving them a 3D release. But the good thing is that I'll get the chance to possibly see 'Kaguya' at the next NYICFF or I'll see it on DVD since it's scheduled release is one week before the festival. But I'm surprised it didn't make it in pick.

I will now associate the name "Kaguya" more with the Naruto villainess than the princess that this and the Naruto Kaguya are based off of.

I saw Book of Life myself. It was okay, but for the most part it's forgettable. The only thing I have to give major props for is the animation, as I thought that was the best thing about the movie. I had no interest in The Box Trolls though; it didn't look all that appealing.

Princess Kaguya was nominated for an Oscar though, so that's still an amazing accomplishment. Smile I'm rooting for an upset against Disney for it to win!

I imagine that's the same mindset the PGA had when they saw it. I'm just going to pick on them and say it went something like this:

"Princess Ka-goo-yeah? What's that? Oh wait, is it that Japanese stuff? Pass."

I'm actually surprised it was considered it all, I figured guild awards would be limited for people in the guilds. Oh well it has an Oscar nomination anyway. Two anime in two years nominated for Oscars, that NEVER happens.

Princess Kaguya not getting a guild nomination does hurt its chances of winning the Oscar. Of course if the guild picks the Lego Movie I guess it won't have much affect. If they pick HTTYD I expect that will win the Oscar.

Although I noticed they also skipped over Song of the Sea.

I have an issue with how some of the awards view animated films. To me instead of picking the best film that happens to be in animated format they tend to pick the best "kids" film.

Kaguya for example to me didn't feel so much as a kids film as a film that happened to be animated, while looking at the films that were nominated they seem to be those typical family films aimed primarily at children. I mean look at the more adult films and they basically never win let alone are nominated, Persopolis, Illusionist, Wind Rises, Waltz with Bashir etc.

But I guess it is what it is.

At least Book of Life got nominated, unlike at the Oscars. It's a fantastic film and deserves any recognition it can get. But, um, Lego Movie? Yeah, no, I feel like the list could have easily kicked that off, replaced it with Kaguya, and nothing of value would have been lost.

There are a lot of good films listed here. Animation is such a great medium for storytelling; I am thrilled these categories and awards exist at all. And with internet and global distribution, available to so many people.

Well, at least The Book of Life got something and why is The Boxtrolls still getting nominations because I really don't get it.

Anyways, at least Princess Kaguya got the Oscars to look forward to despite how its chances of winning is 50/50 by this point.

Hahaha! Exactly. From the comments here I see that 'Book of Life' was not favorable. It might have been visually gorgeous but plot-wise might not be it's strong point. And it's from the same guy that created El Tigre. Well, I guess anime can't appeal to everyone's sensibilities. I mean years ago I had a discussion here with an old co-worker student. He talked about how he LOVED Pixar animation. But when you mentioned anime to them, his first reaction was, "UGGGGH! I can't stand that stuff. All it is, is speed lines and the animation is awful." But yet, he's never sat down and ever watched anything that wasn't oh...SPEED LINES!! Heh. Some years before that I had a female student needed help with trying to research some aspects of anime. So they directed her to me. Her first impression of anime is that it was "dirty" and had lots of "nudity". My thoughts were, what anime were you looking at? Then I gotta give a quick lesson and recommend some research to to. Considering how long ago this was when I listen to this level of ignorance is when anime distribution was still an infant. Talking the '90's. In a day and age where folks should be versed enough in this area, but I guess if it's not your cup of tea then you can't expect to appreciate it. Yet Japan is making sweet love to two Disney princesses over a Ghibli flick. LOL!!!

Compared to all those other awards maybe 'LEGO' should have succeeded over 'Boxtrolls' and 'Book of Life'.
