Nyanta's dub voice completely threw me off. If you can get used to it though maybe I should give it another shot. I know listening to Shiroe a second time, it's no where near as bad as I first thought.

I finished watching it recently. I'm not crazy about this show or Sword Art Online to be honest but at least Log Horizon has enjoyable characters so I slightly prefer it. I hope I'll like the second season more.

In terms of action sequences and animation style (i.e.: character movements) Sword Art Online gets the point. But, the art style (i.e.: character design, locals & vistas, background art), the character interaction, and overall story is done better in Log Horizon, in my book. My main problem with SAO is that at its core a harem show that brings nothing new to the table. Yes, the action scenes were done marvelously, but that doesn't help that the plot was lackluster and the MC is a Gary Stu.

On the other hand, LH is showing its ensemble cast's strong and weak points; it has episodes dedicated to a select number of characters and their time within Elder Tales. I've seen some posts regarding Shiroe as a Gary Stu, but honestly, I think otherwise: he isn't above being deceived by other characters; he requires the assistance of other cast members; there isn't a single "harem leader," but an intricate network of multiple relationships; and (the biggest plus point) at times he isn't even needed to solve a difficult situation (something you won't see in SAO).

Agree with the above. Log Horizon far surpasses SAO in everything except for action sequences. Which doesn't really matter to me because I value proper storytelling and characterization more.

I might have to give this one a try. I initially liked the premise of SAO, but I wasn't a fan of how the show seemed to drop its initial premise partway. It sounds like this show avoids that problem.

Personally, I find both SAO and LH to have strengths in completely different arenas, now that both are into the 50 episode range. SAO and LH both start out with the "trapped in a virtual world" scenario, but take them in completely different directions.

LH develops into a huge world-building affair and asks a lot of poignant questions about how to live and interact in a world you think is actually a video game. It's almost like a "what would happen if thousands of people found themselves on another planet all of a sudden?" story, just using the MMO for the world setting.

SAO, however, quickly ditches the trapped world and instead becomes a very open discussion and prediction on technological advancement and the repercussions as they affect the "real world" and the people who become involved in that expanding virtual world. Each arc just delves into the next "what if?" question: what if the game technology could also have an effect on our real bodies? What if there was a murderer who took advantage of VRMMOs? What if VRMMOs could be used to treat disabled/terminally ill patients? What if VRMMOs allowed interaction with the real world through augmented reality?

Each series fills a different hole in my consumption of fiction.

I'm currently watching SAO and I'm very bored by it. So, if LH is the opposite then I should have a great time watching.

Never seen SAO but that is so Tad Williams' Otherland series. Of course, there is the slight problem that the novel series is almost fifteen, twenty years old {kind of predating most MMOs as well}. But good thing people are still asking the same questions.

Hey, one of these days, maybe technology will catch up but we'd all be dead from some bioengineering disaster or alien invasion or time travel experiment gone wrong. Science Fiction is so genre blind to itself it may as well take a tagline from Plan 9: "Future events like these will affect you... in the future!" But only our events, never their events.

With all that said, the only reason I'm disappointed with Log Horizon's premise is that we don't know what the stakes are. The characters are grappling with it in small doses but it's less world building to me and more "paint by numbers" MMO modding from the inside because it doesn't feel too essential. {It would be funny to find out everyone are up loaded avatars, NPCs in everything but name because, well, that's how such a thing would work... So much for reality...And most Freemiums are just happy with your credit card information but this one wants... your soul! Or rather, a copy of it}

And if the game has quest giving NPCs, why aren't there any talking NPC bosses named Overlord or, I don't know, Diablo? Even Ragnarok had that giant goat god thing. It would help to give it some focus.

i must say i was skeptic to watch this series after i had my heart ripped out and stomped on from SAO but im glad that i took the chance with this one. Id rather not go into detail as to why this series is better than SAO cause id be here all day ranting so ill leave things at that.

With the 2nd season currently airing id judging from the rate of exploration id say that if this series is successful enough we can easily see 3 or 4 more seasons because theres simply that much of their world unexplored as of writing this

Show is boring, I had to drop it.

A little less conversation, a little more action please.

They ruined Nyanta's dandy image... I'm sticking definitely to the subs. Nakata Jouji definitely makes for a wonderful cat.

Thanks Nick, I thought the dub was really good too. It made it into my top 10 favourites.

That would make LH into a bad copy of SAO. Here the big bad boss is not the end level moster (who are mostly dumb), but the world per se, the final frontier.

Apreciate your possitive feedback on Nyanta's casting choice.

Jovan Jackson, whom is one of few and best black voice actors in Texas did a very unique approach to him with a similar but opposite delivery to his japanese counterpart. My little brother loved his performance, a person who dislikes anime ALOT! And it got him hooked to the show, along with branching him out to Parasyte The Maxim. A subbed title. Overall, Nyanta's performance SHOULD'VE FAILED! Yet it blew my expectation and fear for him out of the watter with its execution in how his dialouge changed subltey in the script when protecting a threatened Serara from Demikas.

And everyone else did a fantastic job, though I disagree with you on how Mike Yeager's performance as Shiroe had some wooden delivery. I think that would have to go to Tyler Galindo with a single line as Rudy when he was rejected by some players due to his level. Though he did greatly improve on his other lines.

Scriptwise I was suprised on some of the changes in the dailouge. I heard it was due to the japanese directors wanting Kyle to follow more faithful to the novels. Which Is a very nice action, but I doubt it since it was from a youtube comment. The script flowed with what the characters are, a bunch of gamers. Andrew Love as Naotsugu was a blast on this. We need more abreviated words like DOT or gear level and such. But that is only to enhance my experience.

Overall it was the best dub I heard and analyzed in 2014.

Yet they even have a drawback if no one actually adventures out/raids. The town will dry up in resources, economy plumets, guilds that opress people and everything gets really boring. So it can bring a teaching of moderation on such a small yet ballsy stake

spoiler[If the Players die, they respawn at a cathedral/raid entrance. But for the cost of their mantra/memory of there life. William/Shiroe talked about that themselves when they were having an agreement before raiding the gold spawning dungeon. The stake is'nt clear, but it subtley happens. A scary thought in the back of our minds, that we don't know when the change will be to much on our heroes.]

In comparison to SAO, which the reviewer is mentioning. You die, you die. Simple as that, but it does'nt change anything our heroes do. They still try and get up to the 100th floor, not actually group togethor and build a society out of it to live, progress, and clear the content. Like what the main villian wanted all along. To govern a kingdom of his own creation. A kingdom needs followers and a system of laws. Not raiders trying to get out of the store as fast as they can rashley. Even if they mentioned any sort of thing I stated to flesh it out. It was comepletely overshadowed by its objective in the plot and characters. Out of all those players, Majority of them don't follow what Log Horizon does. Which is even more bizzare when these are new players, yet meta logic states these newbies bought expensive periphirals, pre-ordered, and loged in to play. When your new to something you don't know about yet, the first reaction is to familiarize it with your past knowledge on what you are familar with.
