Yeah, I expected ToZ to drop hard in the 2nd week. Looks like the end of YW2 is really going to happen soon. PS4 staying near the 15K range. Wii U settling for around 8K recently. Xbox One dropping deuces.

Except it's not "dropping hard", it's dropping naturally. It's about on pace for a typical second week for the PS3 generation of games despite this controversy that's starting to feel very manufactured and like angry fanboys being try hard and not willing to let this whole heroine thing go on message boards and twitter.

Tracking Stats for Tales of Xillia 2 in Japan. Just a very quick read here and we can very clearly see that first week sales have very similar numbers in the 350,000 range (340,981 for Zestiria on a console nearing the end of it's life span, 353,747 for Xillia 2 for a variance of 12,766 units) and that second week sales are also in the 30,000 or so range (36,606 for Xillia 2, 29,487 for Zestiria for a variance of 7,119 second week). Total overall variance of 19,976 after 2 weeks.

Now people desperately desperately seem to want to seem to paint this as some catastrophic fudge up that Bandai Namco is getting told immensely hard on but it's just simply not the case. Of course I say this knowing full well that people are just going to believe what they want to believe rather than the statistics and Bandai Namco's own proclamation that they see the games launch and sales numbers as a success. Like the game has the 3rd best first week sales in Japan of this generation after Xillia 1 and 2 and the 6th best in franchise history on all platforms and people are still going to try to label it this catastrophic all time flop and it's absolutely hilarious to me cause it's just so not the case at all.

Just to reiterate one more time and fully put this in perspective as I swear angry fanboys see it:

2nd week sales of 390,353=Success
2nd week sales of 370,377=Catastrophic flop that's a direct result of a PR disaster fallout

It seems that the Xbox One is slowly fading away into obscurity (for reasons understandable).

On another note, congratulations to Devil Survivor 2 taking the No. 1 slot. Smile

Well it depends. A good example would be the new Tomb Raider game from Square Enix which sold about 1.13 million copies in it's first weak across both platforms and was summarily declared a failure by Square Enix because they lost money on it due to the sort of bloated budgeting so-called Triple A gaming leads to and which now has some questioning whether the Triple A gaming model is remotely feasible and has Square Enix trying to get out of it and into cheaper investments like cell phone games. By comparison you indeed have Tales of Zestiria selling 340,981 and it being declared a success by Bamco. They made a profit on it and they managed their budget better clearly plain and simple.

Anyway I wonder what the next generation of gaming looks like and how the whole Triple A gaming thing goes (IMO it should be down the gutter never to be seen again). Developers like Square Enix, Konami and Capcom were decimated during the 7th console generation by trying to adapt that model and win over more Western gamers while companies like Bamco chose to stay out of that model and work the Western audience instead with games like the Dark Souls franchise which manage their budgets carefully. I wonder just how much damage was really done over all though and how it'll show in a few years, but that's sort of another topic for down the road.

They didn't lose money. People thought that since Square Enix put too high an expectation for it, but Tomb Raider achieved profitability by the end of 2013.

  • Last year, Square Enix said it was "very disappointed" that the high review scores for Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot had not translated into the equally high sales it had expected for the game - a whopping 5-6 million units within four weeks.

    Tomb Raider actually sold around 3.4m during its first month on shop shelves - no small amount. But by Square Enix's standards it was nowhere near enough.

    The lost sales came at a turbulent time for Square Enix - after its "extraordinary loss" at the end of the last financial year and before its "fundamental review" of the entire company. And it was easy to suggest that Square Enix had predicted Tomb Raider would sell more because it (and Hitman: Absolution and Sleeping Dogs) simply needed to in order that they fix the company's financial problems.

    But from comments made to Eurogamer last night by Tomb Raider executive producer Scot Amos, it wasn't until much later in the year that the game broke even.

    "By the end of last year - Tomb Raider is in the black," Amos revealed. "We've crossed the line of profitability for the last-gen and PC versions."

After that, including the PS4 and XB1 ports, it's all profits since then.


Incidentally, here's the NPD list of US best-selling games on disc (digital not counted) of 2014:
