Sonny's performance sounds WAY to similar to Eric Vale (ex: America from Hetalia and Asshole main chracter from Asthetica Rogue Hero), it was really offputing. Joel Mcdonalds directing? What happend to the pizazz from Baka and Test? Sure majority of his work felt below average for my taste, but when he can do a good comedy like that. He can do it great despite 2 or 3 cast hiccups or annoyances.

And I know and feel that the lead can do better with the right director. Cause this felt kinda beneath mediocre, until he gave the no tardy line. WHERE WAS MORE OF THAT!? IT ACTUALLY SOUNDED ENTERTAINING FOR HIS CHARACTER DESIGN AND ACTIONS.
Maybe a tone like Josh Grelle, Blake Shepard or Todd Haberkorn,, or accent like Chris Ayres would have done better justice.

Everyone else sounded stiff at best, which can fit cause their assasins. But it mixes dark slapstick comedy at the same time. Pick one tone of voice or the other and stick with it, this isn't Mayo Chiki or Chunibyo where its a plausible exuse.

Still keeping expectations low.

Not bad, just sorta average.

I'll wait to hear the whole first episode before judging it completely though.

Could be great. Could be bad.

Last broadcast dubs were pretty solid.

Not gonna judge off less than a minute of footage.

This is my first time watching any sort of clip from Assassination Classroom and this clip was so weird, but interesting lol. I like how Sonny Strait is delivering his lines. I'd feel like if I was one of those students I'd be pissed off every time I heard his cocky voice lol.

I can't wait to find out who's voicing TG's Kaneki!

Strait overplays the silliness, much like with Lupin III. I know it's a comedy, but part of the fun of the character is that he has a sense of gravity to him and it makes the comedy seem that much funnier. But it should probably be at least a decent dub.

Thirded/fourthed/whatever it is now.

I dunno, maybe I'm just biased because it's Jun Fukuyama in Japanese and there's Durarara this season so I've been associating Koro-sensei with characters like Shinra... but yeah, this doesn't quite...

For some reason, FUNi's dubs have been not-quite for a while now. I mean, all two shows I've watched from them, because the rest of the shows I like haven't gotten dubs. But there's a certain... flourish, maybe? Not quite sure if that's the right word. But the quality that I like, dubs have gotten it (best recent non-FUNi example would be K), and FUNi's dubs have gotten it in the past (e.g. Black Butler, Princess Jellyfish, Romeo X Juliet), but it's just missing here.
I mean, if you don't like the dub, just watch with Japanese audio ... but it's nice to have a good dub.
Aaand, I shouldn't get my hopes up for the other thing I like from that list.
And it's still better than Sentai.

Just remember that this is still a work-in-progress dub that they're recording only a few weeks after the show itself debuts. Not only that, but this is only a one-minute-long excerpt from the very first scene in the entire show.

They've already stated that for the broadcast dub initiative, they'll be going back and fixing and tweaking things before the final release. So yeah, I don't think we should be worrying too much.

I will say, though, that while I do like Sonny Strait and I think he'll generally do well as Koro Sensei, in this particular clip he did play the character a bit too straight-laced. We already know he can do crazy pretty well, so I'd like to see more of his campy charm come through for this character. Smile

It's not the final dub anyway, there's still room for improvement.

Sure it's a work-in-progress now, but what happens if once they go back to tweak it, certain cast members are unavailable for said tweaking, or perhaps a total VA replacement for certain characters. And that's if they do decide to go back and fix anything, if enough people decide that the broadcast dub is not to their liking, they might drop it and just stick to the sub, placing Funi in a conundrum: go back and fix it (more time and money) or just leave it as is.

And then there'll be those that will find the dub perfect and any tweaking will make them mad. Maybe Funi shouldn't have promised the going back and fixing part.

That's why it's better to go for perfect the first time around.

Sonny needs to channels his inner Mark Hamill...or Ben Stein.

I found it be fairly okay... clearly not as good as the sub but Sonny did a fine job. I am not too keen on the students though... some of the wackiness of the whole situation is missing.

I guess we'll see how it goes on Wednesday.
