I have no idea what japanese readers see in Boys Over Flowers that they find so endearing; it has more attempted rape and sexual assault in it's first few volumes than the beginning of Berserk

I do love reading some Shojo though, here are my personal favorites:

Kimi Ni Todoke
Say I Love You
High School Debut
Nodame Cantible
Lovely Complex*
Basara*

[Edit: Almost forgot Nozaki-Kun; that one's great too]

(Asterisks mean i object to some of the stuff it did later on; it seems like shojo tend to really fall apart towards the end of their runs)

What are some of you guys' favorites? I could always use some more recs Smile

I'm a huge shojo manga fan, and a guy just to make it clear if commenting on this article didn't already Very Happy , and I have read quite a few over the years (many stinkers and some really fun gems). It also seems like we share some similar favourites, but I'll give my list anyway.

My personal favourites are

- High School Debut (a really fun romance).
- Kimi ni Todoke (because it just is that great and everyone should check it out).
- Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden (I like the original to an extent, but the prequel is where it turned into an awesome story).
- Gentlemen's Alliance Cross (I loved this story, except for the cop-out ending... it still bothers me to this day, but it was great overall).
- Crimson Hero (sports manga, whether shojo or shonen, are some of my favourites so this was kind of a no-brainer for me).

There's probably a lot more, but I'm drawing a blank on their titles... These are just the ones that immediately stand out to me.

Taiyou no Ie
Joou no Hana
Last Game
Fukumenkei Noise
Akatsuki no Yona
Hana to Akuma

These are ones I'd definitely recommend. All recent, new shoujo to look out for.

Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun by Izumi Tsubaki

Hmm... It's serialized in Square Enix' online magazine, Gangan Online, which mainly aimed at the shōnen demographic.

I just noticed that while I've seen a decent amount of Shojo I've read very little Shojo manga besides CLAMP which aren't your traditional Shojo.

I really should read some. Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden maybe since I adore the Fushigi Yugi anime.

I'm not sure if they're shoujo or josei, but...

Fujoshi Rumi is hilarious and on sale at Rightstuf...

I see two glaring problems with this list.

1. Nodame Cantabile is Josei, not shoujo. It was published in Kiss magazine, a Josei publication.

2. Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun is also not shoujo. It is SHOUNEN! It is published on-line, but it is classified as shounen, not shoujo. The main male character is a shoujo manga artist and the protagonist is female, but that doesn't make the story shoujo. If anything, it is a parody of shoujo manga.

I read a ton of shoujo and josei manga. I embraced my inner late-teenage girl several years ago... Not in a creepy way... really...

My favorites? Probably:

Hibi ChouChou
Ao Haru Ride
Tayou no Ie
Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii
Last Game
Cat Street

There are a ton more...

Skip Beat is excellent. Also Chihayafuru, though that's probably more commonly categorized as josei, but still worth mentioning.

It's got shojo style story-telling, character designs, and is written by an established shojo manga-ka, which, combined with the opinion of a large number of native Japanese readers, should mean a lot more than just assuming Nozaki-kun is shonen simply because Square's web manga site shares a similar name with their shonen print magazine, and I've never seen anything written on Gangan Online's site indicating it's supposed to be targeted at any particular demographic.

Fujoshi Rumi is indeed hilarious, but it's also seinen (from Comic High!).

As a girl, I can't contribute, but props to the guys who own up about reading shoujo. It's sad so few dudes are willing to read girl's books; their loss, but I can't believe anyone would let girl cooties keep them from awesome stuff like Natsume's Book of Friends.

Asking "what is your favorite shoujo" is like asking "what is your favorite shounen", too broad of a question. There's just too many out there which widely vary in style and focus. You have deep heartfelt stories, one-shots depicting one nighters, long polygons filled with tsunderes and danderes, etc.

I guess the real matter is to find out what type of shoujos draw more of a male audience. In that note, I'll add Kaichou wa Maid Sama to the growing list. I just love it!

Speaking in the reverse capacity, as a girl enjoying series with primarily male audiences in-mind, I can honestly say I never expected to enjoy a sports manga/anime.

So I was floored when I read about the controversy surrounding Kuroko's Basketball and, having glimpsed the first episode on Crunchyroll, I decided to give it another more series try. Lo and behold I found a compelling character drama which has actually made me at least a cursory fan of basketball in real life, a feat that's still astounding friends and family.
Now I'm all-ears for any other sports manga or anime that people have been championing.

Just because it was mindless fun, I nominate Usotsuki Lily. Say I Love You is also wonderful.
