That was insightful. There wasn't anything specific about his actual income, which was a tad disappointing for me, but it sounds like he is doing financially fine at this point and really loving his work. That's a hell of a lot more than most people can say.

It seems like loving what they do is a massive factor, and it would pretty much have to be. If those numbers at the beginning are accurate, just about any other job would be at least a small improvement, so it would have to be more than just a job to them. |

He did say that he lived off of his savings for a while. considering the long hours and low pay in the beginning, I'd say that younger animators looking to get into the industry will have a tougher time.

Pretty much the reason I gave up on animating was the long hours and low pay. I'd rather just do my own comics if I'm going to put in long hours and no pay.
Animating's a tough job, and tougher when you're living off crappy food and little sleep. |

If I only had that much gumption and bravery. I would do it if I had a good connection over there and the monies were right.
I have to wonder if he went over there solo, or with friends, family, or did he have a prior connection to help break the ice a bit? I'm already over worked and underpaid here in the good old U.S., so that wouldn't be new. Those hours bite though. |

His first project was basically an unpaid internship and he stayed with a homestay family. When he returned he lived with a friend until he saved enough to get his own apartment.

I wonder what could be done for companies to pay the animators better but still keep a budget to continue to make anime.

Cedric has good taste, but my god, this and other articles stress the importance of legislation to give animators a living wage. Animators have died due to these conditions, it's nothing short of a human rights violation and illegal to not pay them a living wage. Being a new animator seems to be more stressful than being new in most jobs and lasts even longer than most jobs. Also, the studios have has lost it with the ageism, 30 is not old.

+1000. Still, I wish there was some way for anime studios to improve the working conditions of their animators while still maintaining their budget for their shows and other projects. |

It's also a matter of speed, if you can draw fast and decent you will get a pretty good salary.
Like Mashima (fairy tail author) , if he was in the animation industry he would be one of the top animators. |
