I played basketball since elementary school and even into my first few years of university, so you could say I'm quite familiar with the sport. However I have no issue watching KnB, it's still an entertaining show. The review makes it sound like the anime disgraces the sport and makes it unwatchable, which is false. The show is very entertaining and looks really great, anyone can enjoy it (regardless if you play the sport or not).

As someone who watched the previous 2 seasons, I got into this season's momentum without much of a problem, and I agree with Orsini's assessment that newbies to the show will find the first 2 episodes quite confusing.

2 episodes in and we already have a big transgression to physics - Haizaki. If Kise was the Generation of Miracle's Mystique, then Haizaki is Rogue. (NTR's Kise girlfriend...).

Animation-wise, the characters movements are all highly-detailed and smooth, coupled with some interesting camera angles (the viewing angle during captain Kasamatsu's drive had a very strong CG-assisted animation).

Overall, the previous 2 seasons were very enjoyable to watch, and it looks like this season will be as well. Not enjoyable like Slam Dunk's realistic portrayal of basketball, but enjoyable because it isn't realistic with its over-the-top way of showing basketball-playing.

Just a little note about the review, it was written that:
ANN wrote:
At this point, Kuroko and his teammates at Seirin High have faced off against every other member of the Generation of Miracles, a group of basketball prodigies with unnatural abilities

But Seirin - or any of the other schools the Generation of Miracle members are in - hasn't played against their former captain, Akashi, IIRC.

Am I the only when who thinks Kagami's face looks weird in the show?

Could you elaborate? The only similarities are that they're both about high school basketball in Japan, are very popular, and (will probably) have a similar number of episodes. Do you have some sports or basketball quota you've already reached? oO

I think it's way too early to say that Haizaki is a pure-D villain. We haven't had any of his backstory yet, aside from the lunch scene. I'm sure he's got some dramatic issues that have made him the way he is. Smile

One of the things that does drive me crazy about this show is the flagrant abuse of the rules of the game. There seems to be no shot-clock, nor any but the most minimal, absolutely necessary officiating going on. Basketball is not a contact sport, so when players are showing on court bruising (i.e., hits serious enough to appear during the game instead of later) and blood with nary a foul called, you know the refs are on a coffee break or being paid off. Smile

I'm no true basketball fan and am willing to give sports anime a lot of latitude about how they present their game play (I made it through all of Eyeshield 21 where the refs' job was limited to calling touchydowns), but this does on occasion grind my gears. Smile

So glad this is getting a review spot! Looking forward to the season.

My love for KnB goes deeper than the law of physics . I wasn't ever really good with that subject in HS anyway...

Even though I'm a physicist I'm not really offended by what's shown in KnB. Ofcourse, its a bit hard to digest the full court shoot of Midorima or the formless shoot of Aomine or Kuroko's dragonball style passes or Kagami's super high jumps and meteor jam and many more ridiculous moves. But its still way more exciting to watch and those moves do surprise you while concentrating on watching the game and make things more exciting.

So I think its perfectly alright to have creative freedom in such cases. Similar to how its extremely hard for me to digest some things from the movie Interstellar like the spaceship travelling inside the blackhole or the crew traveling through the warmhole. But those things definitely created a huge impact. So its alright.

And after saying so many nice things about KnB, I wonder why the reviewer gives it a C? Surely its one of the new generation of sports anime which started the trend of exciting sports games coupled with ever improving detail in animating these moves. So a higher rank would be no problem I guess.

And also every single time KnB comes up, all people who have watched and admired Slam Dunk immediately start comparing the two series. I fail to understand why they should try to compare them. Though they are have the same sport, they developments in both the shows is quiet different. Of course there will be similar patterns in plays or even matches. Its the same sports you can't expect everything to differ.

I tried watching Slamk Dunk after watching the first season of KnB, and was really not able to get to completing the show. As the reviewer rightly pointed out, Slamk Dunk's animation is definitely showing its age. The movements of the players, the pace of the dialogues, plays and in general developments in the shows really look outdated. After watching the plays in KnB I simply could not derive the same thrill of watching a close game from Slam Dunk. Of course its one of the classics but personally, I think its time to move on and stop comparing both shows.

I'm just an average basketball fan, but I have a friend that is really into it, both watching and playing it, and even though he's not really a manga/anime fan, he's really into Kuroko, and instead of getting offended by the team's impossible stunts, he simply gets hyped by them, and his other basketball-playing friends do the same.

So yeah, even if this isn't real basketball, it's still something really cool for basketball fans. And personally, I also enjoy it a lot.

The physics and basketball don't offend me so much. Though I'm getting very uninterested in the supernatural abilities they're doing.

The show started supernatural, but it was okay. But now they've gone a bit too far.

My concern is that the show is going to keep trying to outdo itself. Every new character has a 'special' ability. Every game needs to have more abilities, or take old ones even further. This is the same route Eyeshield 21 and Price of Tennis took, and oh my did those go a tad bit far.

My other issue is the introduction of new characters. Every game has a new character that has a story and some connection with some of the characters. If they want us to hate a character, they over do his bad personality. First it was the 5/6, but now there are the other totally awesome guys that weren't mentioned before. Oh and this new guy who was on the old team but left, and he's totally awesome too. I would have no issue with this if it is done well, but it really feels shoehorned. This is supposed to be a silly show to me, but it's getting way over the top.

Some franchises just need to know when to stop, they can't just keep one-upping themselves.

This.

Again, the reviewer is wrong and forgets about Makoto Hanamiya's foul play.

KnB is a good show, if a bit overrated. Besides, the Slam Dunk anime never did the manga justice.

Also, why would anyone start with season 3 !?

*nods head*

Ugh, all these people coming out of the woodwork talking about the realism in the show need to relax because... It's. An. Anime. All it sounds like is that these experts (or not) in the given fields showing off how much they know about the given topic.

The show is about magical bishies with rainbow hair named after colours playing basketball. No need for physics or real basketball rules, how else are they gonna do cool moves AND gives us backstory on the court?

Interesting comment about how the characters have similar body builds to make animators' lives easier and allow them to create smoother sequences. I particularly remember being amazed by how dynamic Aomine's chaotic moves looked, it's something that doesn't quite come across in the manga and I think this series has benefited greatly from being animated because of that.

As others have pointed out, I'm a bit surprised by how many actual mistakes the review has (forgetting Hanamiya, and that Seirin hasn't faced Akashi, who has without doubt the most supernatural ability of the entire series).
ETA: That Lauren forgot about Hanamiya is even stranger since he's even mentioned in the episode's first minutes

Also this:

I can see why jumping into season three might be tough if you haven't seen the first two.

Why would anyone jump into S3 without watching the previous two and why is that a negative? Would someone just start watching Stardust Crusaders from the new Egypt arc and be able to understand everything that's going on? In a season crowded with sequels that wouldn't make any sense to newcomers, this seems like a weird criticism to make. And:

Quote:
Kuroko's Basketball is bound to shock and offend serious basketball players (and some physicists)

I think it's safe to assume that everyone watching all the way to S3 that's not hatewatching is way over being offended by the ridiculousness. I actually would find it kind of silly to be offended by any over-the-top sports anime. There's some stuff that's really eye-roll inducing (Haizaki's "stealing" ability, for instance), but offensive?

This. This so much.

I don't know why after 50 episodes people are still complaining about how exaggerated & unrealistic the moves are. That's how things have been since season 1. If you don't like it, then why are you still watching it?

Personally, I don't like basketball or any sports so it took me forever to do my 3-episode rule with Kuroko's Basketball and by the time I got around to it I was surprised by how much I enjoyed episode 1. I got hooked, not by the basketball, but by the characters & their struggles.

Yes, Slam Dunk shows realistic basketball game play, while Kuroko's Basketball is more shonen-like. It gives you near impossible scenarios which excites its viewers. Its 2 totally different anime based on the concept of basketball.

The unrealism of Kuroko is the reason why I love it. If I wanted realistic basketball with the same moves done repeatedly for 50+ times, I'd watch the NBA. Razz

I don't mind the mystical plays in Kuroko. I like the variety in sports shows, ranging from realistic to plausible to fantasy.

Though I'll readily admit some recent moves have been kind of...eh...I generally find the shonen power levels kind of fun; "My hawk eye is no match for his eagle eye!" and how the show grows more magical is it wears on. Actually, I think I'm more put-off by the total inability to write a convincing female character rivalry that doesn't involve boobs.

I love the animation in Kuroko. It's interesting to note that, yeah, there're pretty much the same build. In this case, I'm willing to sacrifice character design for movement. Especially Aomine's fluidity.

It's the other way around Eagle Eye (Izuki) < Hawk Eye (Takao). Which doesn't change how silly it is, of course
