I was a member of the Chiba Lotte Marines fan club when Bobby Valentine was in charge of the team. He revolutionized Japanese baseball. I respect him as much as I respect Matthew C. Perry.

Interestingly enough, when Valentine returned to manage the Red Sox, he was basically despised by everyone. He was fired the next season.

He was a maverick. Worked well in Japan; worked well with the young Mets; didn't work as well with Red Sox full of veterans.

I think he got blamed for a lot of what was going on with the club also. There was a lot of scrutiny on him from day one, and every little thing was blown out of proportion. Unfortunate, really.
