40 minutes is good. With all the extra cash, it could've been longer, but whatever. I hope they do another kickstarter for another episode next year, and another the year after, and so on. Having a full series in about 10 years would be nice... |

$625.000 really isn't that much for a project in development for about 18 months that required a decent-sized staff. |

Under The Dog asked for $580,000 for a 30 minute OVA, so.... My understanding is that the actual animation production for a single episode of anime generally ranges from about $200,000-$350,000. That doesn't even count kickstarter fees, rewards, wages, and just keeping the lights on in general, so I'm not surprised at all with this. Actually sort of thrilled that it is 40 minutes. |

Little Witch Academia 2 already had some funding for second part behind, but the Kickstarter doubled it's proposed length and made sure it happened.

That money also has to cover all of the backer rewards and Kickstarter's fees too. Plus, there was also money for a dub included as well (when the funding reached $500,000, I think?) but we all know how some people who backed it responded to that. |

It's not unusual for even average western TV animations to cost as much as 5-600K dollars per 20 minute episode.

It should probably be pointed out that we've had NUMEROUS postings on ANN about how UNDERPAID anime creators are. So even if (for example) we were to assume that the LWA project is costing TRIPLE (I'd say less, but let's go ahead and triple a $200k budget) what it should, IF all that money were to go to the animation team, is that REALLY a bad thing?

I've heard so much about this little series, but I'm kind of disappointed that I don't have a budget big enough to get it. I've ran across quite a few students here who have seen it and "love" it. I've yet to see it myself. I hope to one day see the films released at a reasonable price.

A typical TV episode is closer to $100,000. $300,000-$350,000 would be the high end for a big budget 30-minute OVA (and during the bubble, a TV episode for the most lavishly produced series). There are definitely Kickstarter fees and backer rewards to consider though. Anything beyond is profit.
It'd be great if the money actually went to the animation team, but I doubt it. That would create chaos within a studio (discontent over who gets to work on what because of differing pay scales) and potentially impact salary expectations for future projects. The main reason crowdfunding is so alluring is the potential profit to the IP owner. In the best case, some of it might roll back into the company, keeping people employed during lean times. However, anime profit often boils down to select individuals pocketing it all. |

The first episode ended up streaming practically everywhere it seemed (it's still on Crunchyroll I believe, and perhaps on Youtube as well); I wouldn't be surprised if the 2nd episode ends up widely available for streaming sometime after backers have received their rewards and the October roadshow have finished. Another option might be to see if a showing can be arranged at an anime con - they're doing that for Anime Expo, at least. |
