Tsubaki only had a chance with Kousei because Kaori died. If she had lived they probably would have started dating.

Hooking up with a childhood friend sounds like something appealing to otaku. You don't have to risk going out to meet someone new, & you don't have to break into their parents house & steal their childhood photos to imagine them as a loli.

I was about to say the exact same thing.
Depends on the anime but yeah the point of childhood friend is to serve as a backup in case the protagonist doesn't fall for other characters. Or, like in FMA or YuYu Hakusho, the childhood friend is the default romantic lead so most of the plot doesn't waste time on the hero's love life.
But, I bet few of those couples ever had an extreme childhood where they met each other as babies or their moms met before they were born.

The US has always gone doe-eyed over high school sweethearts that work out instead. It's probably because childhood friendships are more affected by the fact that girls have cooties and need to be kept quarantined.

That's still pretty low percentage.
Might as well, since childhood friends know all your secrets

I think it's the reason for the popularity of incest stories.

There is an argument for growing up with someone and knowing everything about them, both the good and bad qualities. Part of the excitement of dating someone new and falling in love is learning all of their preferences and forming a new bond. At least, that has been my experience.

Oh come on, I'd give them more credit. Sure 7/50 is a "low" percentage, but percentages are meaningless without context. 7/50 is 14%, which is actually pretty high when you compare that to the previous generation which was at 1/50 or 2%. The difference between youngest age group and the oldest age group is about 1 generation (not even quite 1 generation considering 1 generation is about 25 years, so maybe a little less). That means the percentage of childhood friends increased 7 times or 700% in just roughly 1 generation!! That's HUGE! The percentage might be low when compared to normal relationships, but the fact that childhood friend relationships are more prevalent in the newer generation by 7 times is absolutely massive. But obviously this statistic is just a street survey. I think we need a more comprehensive study.
But i can see why it increased. Childhood friends grow up together and get to know each other very well. Growing up together also means they grow to like each other and share similar views and opinions, which are very important to a relationship. I certainly think that there are many people in the world that would be right for me; people that i can fall in love with and they with me, but there is a best person. I might not meet that person but i will meet one person that will do me justice. For these people it happens to be one of their childhood friends. And good for them, i wish them the best and i hope they last.

It's an Interest piece, not an actual news piece. How about ya remove the stick from your rear and go play with it outside.

I couldn't trust this "highly scientific" survey less and the only easier romance option in manga/anime then the girl(s) next door/childhood sweetheart would be your sister as you don´t even have to leave your house to flirt her up .
dxthegreat does have a point as the interest piece isn´t well written and the anime chosen doesn´t suite the topic that much. What i would love to know would be faithfulness statistics for these couples as we are talking about a society where (male) cheating isn´t a sin but getting caught is. Is it easier to cheat on someone you have known for most of your life or not?
I wonder. Research a piece on that.
