Very interesting article; however since I consider series that are 48-52 episodes long with trepidation, I think that I'll most definitely be giving this one a pass.

And, here, I thought that Inuyasha was long!

I'm glad I got into One Piece when I did. Nowadays I have a hard time getting myself to jump into shows like Fairy Tail which is 200+ episodes or starting Space Brothers which is only 100. Starting One Piece may have maybe been too daunting a task for myself if I was only starting now.

I think I started One Piece during my 2 month summer break after my sophmore year of college. I wasn't really doing anything that summer so I had nothing but time. I was getting through something like 10-15 episodes a day sometimes and by the end of 2 months I had caught up to the most recent episodes, which at that time was either around the end of Thriller Bark or the beginning of Sabaody. I can't remember exactly. nearly 400 episodes in a 2 month time span is a lot of anime to consume.

I've always been meaning to watch it, but the size is frankly ridiculous. If I watched a strict two episodes a day I could catch up in just over a year. It's tempting to take such a sedate route instead of trying to marathon it; less chance of burnout. Then again, the anime moves so slowly that marathoning might be the only option in some places. Hmm, decisions decisions.

I got into One Piece around 10 years ago... it has since become my all time fav anime... how much do I love this series? The second time I went to Japan I rode the Solider Dock Adventure at J World!

I remember having to get through DBZ when it was aired M-F on CN, and while one episode, or two on VHS, was slow, and often frustrating, it was a good pace and didn't overdo it.
(FTM, I remember when the syndicated stations used to show two episodes a week, on Sunday mornings, and that was like Snoopy's old comic strip of reading one word of War and Peace a day.)

I could probably do the same thing for One Piece, if the concept itself wasn't so goofy, and the character design so Yellow Submarine.

I completely agree with the Jump in the Middle advice. I started reading One Piece with digital Weekly Shonen Jump in early 2013, which was the tail end of an arc, leading into the current Dressrosa stuff. With no prior One Piece experience beyond the basics (Luffy wants to be the greatest Pirate ever) it took me... oh... about a month to fall in love with One Piece. Its not the MOST accessible long running series ever, but its not impossible to figure out what's going on coming in late.

Interesting article and I do believe some of these advices could work for newcomers to the series. Perhaps I'll share it with my brother, at the pace he's going now he'll never catch up ^^'

I started watching One Piece back in 2009 when there were about 420 or so episodes out. This is just me but I tend to love overly long shows and I can watch them extremely fast, even faster than a 2-cour show.

Jump in in the middle: Check.

I started watching regularly during the Fishman Island arc, and have never bothered with old episodes. I do like the movies and "Episode Of" specials that retell the older stories in condensed form, and I hope the whole story is eventually available that way to provide an option for busy people. The TV series is so glacially paced that I really don't think a 2-hour movie covering a full arc would need to lose all that much.

Skip OPs/Recaps: check.

Also: Go to con. Ask US licensee if they still have permission to produce a version that edits objectionable content. If the answer is "yes," ask if we can please have such a version that defines "objectionable content" as non-canon material and obvious, time-wasting filler crap.

I know it has to be done to meet the weekly schedule, but in a series this long, all those slow pans and repetitive scenes that accomplish nothing start to seem a bit disrespectful of the viewers.

I used to watch One Piece back when it was on Cartoon Network...the good ol' days xD I remember getting through the chopper and Alabasta arcs, and think I stopped after that/it went off the air? If I were to pick it back up, I'd start after that and trust that my basic recollections of each characters backstory is good enough, seeing as that was years ago. But it's hard to find time to dedicate to One Piece when I look at my shelves and see a bunch of unwatched anime I own, as well as new stuff that's coming out that I can barely keep up with >o< If only this pesky 9-5 job would stop getting in the way...

InuYasha isn't as long as Urusei Yatsura, even with the Final season included. Watching long (100-200 episode) shows is hard enough to do as it is, but OP is just way too long to even care to start. I'll enjoy the doujinshi, that's about it.

Oh, and before I forget: if you're watching the anime, skip the openings and recaps frequently.

Unless I particularly enjoy an OP or ED, I do this for every single anime after the first episode (or if there's a mid-season change). There's no need to waste 3 minutes every episode if I don't care for the song/imagery.

THANK YOU GOD ALMIGHTY SOMEONE FINALLY SAID IT: TAKE F'ING BREAKS.

For Gods sake why does everybody and their grandma think that you have to plow through everything in one go with these types of series it only makes the length seem much more daunting than it really is. Jeez.

Granted I have been spoiled by the seasonal anime cycle so my general patience has shrunk (especially getting busier the older I get) which have somewhat been the things preventing me from trying out longer anime such as Gintama and Space Brothers which are nowhere near one piece long but still will take a while to get through.

In the case of one piece though I did do the jump in the middle strategy and while I don't really like doing that anymore because I like getting the context for things as the story properly progresses, it's worked fine with me in this series's case. There's still some arcs and little pieces that I haven't read/watched yet but I don't view that as much of a problem in that if I ever feel like it I'll have an extra adventure to read about at my leisure, the only thing really stopping me is whether I want to read the manga or watch the anime. (and I mostly am leaning on manga since aside from the few times Toei puts effort into their visuals there isn't much for me in later episodes of the series I find. If the anime had ended at episode 130 and I had to read about the rest I would have been perfectly fine with that.)

It's not everyone's cup of tea but I definitely am glad I saw the series.

WARNING: SPOILERS

I find the art of the series when it began to be pretty rough. So, for the first couple of arcs, I would have to recommend the anime. You're in good hands whether you watch the dub(FUNimation) or the original, but that Japanese cast is a sight to behold and Mayumi Tanaka is brilliant. I guess whatever works for you, or even both if you've got the time.

I would break it up like this:

Anime Episodes 1-53, 62-130*, 144-152
Manga Volumes 26+, check back with the show for your favorite moments or fights if you so choose.

There is a double-edged sword to starting with the anime, of course. It moves slower, and typically that's not so bad, but you'll notice some obvious padding in the Don Krieg arc (spoiler[that poison bomb sure took a long to fall in the ocean]). I've even heard people say they found the Captain Kuro arc too long.

*Episodes 98, 99, 101, and 102 are filler, but it's only four episodes and you can maybe shotgun them all at once. At least it's not a full arc.

[EDIT: In cases like this (i.e., where this thread is likely to be read by people not familiar with the series) spoiler tags are mandatory, even with the warning at the beginning of the post. - Key]

Not just anime series, but ANY series now:
Our Netflix/Hulu/Crunchyroll-enabled system of viewing has now completely evolved out of the concept of watching one episode a night or week, and if you tell your friend about a show you watched, or he's telling you about a show he's just found, ten bucks says he will say "I'm halfway through binging that series/I've got to go binge that before next season!"
When Netflix premiered their big Daredevil event, within two days we had fans saying "I got through the entire series, and it was great!"(Netflix has now switched to the idea of premiering some of their series one episode per week, to keep us teased, and to keep all the excitement from fizzling out prematurely.)

As noted above, back in my day, junior, even DBZ was parceled out one prescriptive episode at a time, and I've found that's just about the best way to watch any series.
It seems now like we're binging almost literally anything we watch now because we can--Even kids too young to have grown up on "Tune in next week, same Bat-time, same Bat-channel" are now thinking "It's there, let's plow."
Which always seems to me like the little kids' fantasy of "When I'm grown up and on my own, I can eat the whole package of Oreos if I want to!"

I first got into One Piece back when the 4kids dub aired on TV and I was too young to realize how awful it was. I stopped for years and only got back into it about 4-5 years ago with the Funimation dub. Now I follow the dub and the manga, although I've seen most of it subbed as well and read a lot on the wiki, where I occasionally edit.

I'd recommend episodes 275-278 as a good place to test the waters if you're not sure about starting it and don't mind spoilers. Those episodes are a fairly self-contained flashback arc (and the results of it) and make up one of the best (and saddest) backstories I've ever seen in any anime.

Dear lord, I've been telling myself to watch One Piece ever since I was a freshman in high school. AND IT'S STILL GOING!!

Back then, the only major shonen options were One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, and (manga wise) D. Gray Man. Never bothered with Naruto because I just don't care about ninjas in general. Only watched Bleach but even then I had to stop and restart because I was watching a filler arc on TV; finished it online and I have zero desire to read the manga. Gave up on D. Gray Man because the delays were too frequent for me to keep track off. The only major shonen title (aka longer than 25 episodes that I've finished were Reborn!, Hunter X Hunter 2011, and FMA both series. Maybe Rurouni Kenshin counts but that's the live-action film trilogy not the TV series or OVAs. Gintama is the only major shonen I'm watching now; zero interest in Fairy Tail

Anyway, so glad I don't have to start at the very beginning because that's what prevented me from starting at all. I had planned to skip filler arcs anyway. So, now my question is where to start after the Water 7 arc. Which story arc should I approach first: one with humor or serious? Should I start with the one aboutspoiler[ Luffy's brother] or one more recently aired? I have no plans reading the manga because A. that's what Crunchyroll subscriptions are for and B. I prefer owning physical manga & I'm not spending a ton of cash if I don't like this series.
