More Lupin is always great, but as I just finished buying all the Funimation specials on eBay a few weeks ago, I'm a little bummed that they didn't pick one that hasn't been released yet.

If it gets any decent extras, I'll probably buy this again, even though it's not one of my favourites.

Well, the good news is that this proves that OOP FUNimation titles can in fact be license-rescued by other companies.

The bad news is that out of all of FUNi's Lupin films, they had to start with quite possibly the weakest one. Confused

As a Lupin III fan, this is good news for me. There were a few Lupin releases Funimation handled that I never got a hold of before they went out of print, so I hope Discotek gets more of them.

Nice it's getting rescued, but I already have Funi's version, so I have need for this.

Speak for yourself (well, I guess you were); this is probably my favorite Lupin TV special. I really like the way it doesn't shy away from the moral ambiguity of Lupin and company. I dislike it when he's too heroic.

The article does say it will be "remastered" although that hardly tells us much.

Vampire: The DT release of the special will most likely have a revamped A/V job. FUNi used some crappy masters for their Lupin DVDs.

Spaceman: The weakest FUNimation Lupin special would actually have to be Get Lost, Nostradamus. But some people seem to go for it, some reason.

Fronzel: Better print, period.

I wasn't sure if any of Discotek's Lupin properties were former FUNi titles, but it's good to see they're going after those too. I'm just glad that I managed to get my hands on a copy of Fuma Conspiracy, since they don't have that one in-print anymore.

Technically, that was a theatrical film, the fourth one.

I think the weakest Lupin feature Funimation licensed was Columbus Files (Fujiko's Unlucky Days). That was physically painful to watch, it was so hackneyed. I have a hard time believing Nabeshin directed it, because it wasn't even bad-funny. It was just horrendous.

And I only own a copy because it was in a boxset.

We should take into account that back when Lupin was released most of FUNi's releases were badly encoded(regardless of length). FUNi has mostly greatly improved their encoding. Maybe because the technology has advanced for them to make it easier & faster or just not many cared back then because many viewers were still using SDTV's. So I believe what Discotek just means is that it will have much better video quality, not an actual remaster of the film. Unless it was done in Japan and I don't know about it. ?

Great news, Voyage to Danger is one of my favorite Lupin specials. I was worried after hearing some bad feedback on it but I loved it. Its different & more serious as expected from Masaaki Oosumi.
Yeah I love goofy Lupin but sometimes I want a different Lupin like what we saw in the beginning of season 1.

It is remastered completely. I own the Japanese Blu-Ray boxset for the first 21 TV Specials and that had the TV Specials completely remastered, most notably the ones done on film print. The first 4 TV Specials that they have released use the same master as the Blu-Ray for the US DVD release as I have compared them.

So trust me if you have the FUNi DVDs, you want the Discotek ones, they blow FUNi's out of the water and then some.

More Lupin is good Lupin, but it's a shame (as someone who has all the Funi and Geneon/Pioneer discs) that we're treading old ground. Still - good news for the new fans.

Now, if only we could get them to release the Red Jacket series in one set so I could free up some shelf space with all those singles.
