So there is a reason why my twitter feed is being spammed with Love Live! all this time. Must be something worth checking out in Japan.

Congratulations to the movie producer.

The Love Live Party must still be alive and brewing powerfully in many prefectures of Japan. Smile

If you haven't been driven to check it out already from all that you probably should

Perhaps the folks at Sunrise thought that the initial group's time has come to an end and that it was time for a new group to appear?

In this section of the news:
Quote:

Love Live! The School Idol Movie sold 251,811 tickets in its first weekend, earning 400,235,800 yen (about US$3,240,900). In terms of amount of tickets sold, the film was in first place, but in terms of box office earnings, the film opened in second place behind Our Little Sister, the live-action film adaptation of Akimi Yoshida's (Banana Fish) Umimachi Diary manga.

the bolded part is wrong!
Umimachi Diary sold 229,117,100 yen, with 181,642 admission that weekend; this makes it 2nd to Love Live! film in both earnings and admission.

This is still partially wrong. As per Oricon and many other Japanese news sites, Umimachi Diary grossed 229,117,100 yen from 181,642 tickets in its opening weekend. So how could the Love Live Movie, having grossed 400,235,800 in its opening weekend, have opened in 2nd place?

Quote:

The film is still ranked #1 in the Japanese box office.

As much as I don't want to admit it, the LL movie actually dropped to #2 for weekend box office gross in its 2nd weekend, but reclaimed it for the 3rd weekend. As per Oricon below, Mad Max grossed 264,784,500 yen from 174,807 tickets in its opening weekend, while LL grossed 261,241,140 from 188,061 tickets, where this higher average ticket price suggests that more adults watched Mad Max compared to LL in the 2nd weekend.

It is more appropriate to say that LL has ranked #1 in terms of tickets sold, for its 3rd weekend in a row, and that it clinched back #1 in terms of weekend box office gross after barely losing it to Mad Max after its 2nd weekend, by around 3.5 million yen.

Quote:

Dear Ejc, you should replace these two numbers.

I think this part of the news is also not accurate:
Quote:
This brings the film's total box office earnings to more than 1.2 billion yen. The film is still ranked #1 in the Japanese box office.

If I am not mistaken, this means the film still hasn't sold more than 1.2 billion yen in the past weekend.

That's true, it is currently at 1,194,420,000 (11億9442万円), so it is still short of 1.2 billion yen by around 5.5~5.6 million yen. I assume it is rounded to the nearest 10,000 yen because he also gave the 3rd weekend gross as a rounded figure too (2億6716万円). This is also linked in the Yaraon article linked here.

It did worse than the 1st recap movie in the opening weekend... and had more screens in comparison. That's a really telling story. Did this one cover a weaker part of the series (I did not watch the anime) or were people not interested this time around?

¥47,706,500 *33,362 *78 **.*
¥71,680,000 ***,*** *52 **.* Shingeki no Kyojin Guren no Yumiya (進撃前編)

^Well. just like sim0n said it's still a recap movie based on manga (not original series like LL, Guren Lagann, etc), from my observation all this time, I haven't found any popular franchise's movies that based on manga (not original), that its movies are recap doing extra-ordinary numbers anyway. Now, if it's a new content, then we'll see. There's just not much you can do with recap adaptation (based on manga, even popular ones) anyway.
Just look at all those popular franchises based on manga like OP, Naruto, Conan, Bleach, even Shinchan, etc...none of them ever had recap movies, despite all kinds of different box office gross each film had, all of those films being released all basically new contents (not recap).
Beside all those SnK ova bundle manga that being released always have consistent sales and still the biggest compare to all other popular franchise releases like Magi, Haikyuu, Nnt, etc...so obviously the fanbase's interest is still there, furthermore the 1st recap film screening also being extended from suppose 5/6 weeks because there's stilll fan requests at that time despite it's once again a recap based on manga series.
