The instant that Patreon link flashed on the screen, I thought the same thing.

Step 1: Nintendo hires aryoksini.

Step 2: Aryoksini helps develop the next Mario game.

Step 3: ...

Step 4: Profit.

This will be interesting. Last Mario 64 remake level I read about got shut down rather quick because the author admitted to lifting animations directly from Nintendo.

However in this case, the music, assets, animations, etc. are all created or being used with permisison from the other users in the Unreal 4 shared library.

Will be interesting to see if this one gets shut down as quick.

Pretty neat!

While Mario doesn't need to go hyper-realistic, the series could definately benefit from better shaders, particles and lighting married to a fantastic cohesive art direction that can take advantage of it all for a really trippy experience!

The ultra-realism is indeed awe-inspiring, but I personally think Super Mario is alright without it.

It could work if Mario was actually rendered in the same style, and with more muted colors for his clothes...

Yeah, I thought this project was just for fun, but I, too, saw the Patreon link up there and did a virtual facepalm. Do people not know about Nintendo's draconian policies on for-profit fanworks? Or do they think they just won't get caught? 20th Century Fox managed to bring fanworks based on The Simpsons[i] to a halt pretty early on. (They were even worse than Nintendo though, as they sent C&Ds even to not-for-profit works. The intent was to remove all traces of any unofficial [i]Simpsons anything from the Internet.)

There's no chance of this guy making things for Nintendo either. Nintendo picks out whom to acquire, whether it be people or companies, and Nintendo only chooses ones with a proven track record and are in line with Nintendo's business strategies. That's why, compared to Sony Computer Entertainment, Microsoft Games, and SEGA, Nintendo has acquired so few companies.

As for the art style, while I like the photorealism they can pull off, Mario clashes with it. Nintendo CAN do this level of photorealism, but it's saved only for commercials and is done for laughs. Rather, the universe of Super Mario currently has a stylized cartoonish look with ridiculous detail. There hasn't been a 3-D Mario platformer made for the Wii U yet though, so I don't know for sure what Nintendo would do with that. But as far as art direction goes, Nintendo has always saved realistic environments for more realistic characters.

Just so everyone is clear: This isn't an actual game. The purpose of the demo is to show what Mario could look like rendered in Unreal Engine 4 with good lighting.

So he basically took environments that he and others already made and stuck Mario and some coins in it? It looks great, sure, but is it really recreating Mario 64?

Nintendo needs to make a Mario game like this. What better way to take the franchise in a new direction?
