There is a certain internet meme involving one Philip J. Fry that is appropriate here.

Doubt they'll fix the interlacing issue, but them getting on board with BD is huge news.

I'm thrilled that Revolutionary Girl Utena is getting the Blu-Ray treatment- it was a really awesome show that's deserving of more recognition, IMO. Smile

For those wondering about the Japanese BD sets' quality, here's a look at them.

The main question for Utena on BD is whether the rather severe aliasing in the DVD remaster is present. The answer is that yes, there is aliasing, but not nearly as severe as the DVD. On the plus side, little in the way of grain reduction to be seen. So, not as good as it could be, but still by far the best version that exists. A little disappointing, but pretty much what was expected.

The Adolescence of Utena BD doesn't appear to have any of the aliasing present in TV series BDs/TV remaster DVDs and the movie remaster DVD. Looks rather nice, though the digital animation and CG portions obviously aren't as sharp as the 35mm film, and there is some edge enhancement. I've included the CPM DVD in the comparison, as it and the Nozomi remaster release were kind of a tossup. More compression artifacts, EE, and jacked up contrast on the CPM DVD, lots of aliasing and what looks like pretty heavy noise reduction on the Nozomi DVD.

Although I commend Right Stuf for finally getting into the BD market, it is deflating to hear that the Japanese BD's have issues. I hope for the best because I really want to support TRSi, and Utena is a amazing anime.

I've sat on the fence and sat on the fence about Utena, now it looks like it's time to get down and get to it.

Thanks Right Stuf.

Awesome. I will most likely be buying the BDs. And unless they have a similar release as the DVD LE sets, then I probably won't be getting rid of the DVDs either. The artwork and booklets that came with the DVD LEs were great and I don't want to give those up if they aren't with the BDs.

My sister kept bugging me to finish Utena, but I've become a bit of a Blu-ray snob; watching it at my computer makes the difference in visual quality very noticeable to me. Happy as a clam that Utena is FINALLY getting a Blu-ray treatment! Very Happy

On a well calibrated TV/Display the Japanese BDs look quite nice.
I will definitely pre-order when they come up at Right Stuff.

I liked the Right Stuf DVD set when it came out. But that is the problem with buying DVD only. I bought the DVD because I didn't think BD's would come out for it. The days of DVD only need to go away. I can't afford to double dip for every show that didn't come out with a BD initially.

More power to you all that are going to double dip, and to you all that waited hoping for a BD release.

I'm personally hoping that the Adolescence of Utena movie will have a standalone BD release. I love my snazzy DVD box sets of the series and am hesitant at the idea of double-dipping on the whole thing.

Yesss. I mostly want to know if they'll make another ring available or what they'll include with this release.
