Hmm, they say it doesn't work at all for Mac, I may just try this to get ARK, and see if I can make it work, or if it is horrible DRMed.

I love the way that 50 downloads equals more than 70.

No kidding, especially since more than half of CPM's anime catalog is crap (such as M.D. Geist, Garaga, Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer, etc.).

AFAIK, the only CPM titles worth watching are Grave of the Fireflies, Night on the Galactic Railroad, Now and Then, Here and There, The Venus Wars, Harmagedon, Project A-Ko and Record of Lodoss War.

After I download a video, how long can I view it on my computer?
Most TotalVid titles have a 7 day viewing period during which you can view the video an unlimited number of times. Your viewing period begins when you complete the transaction.

At the end of the viewing period, the file will remain on your hard disk but will not be playable. If you wish to continue viewing, you can return to TotalVid and renew your license or purchase a hard-copy DVD or VHS available on our site.

Wow. I'm having DVD enhanced with DIVX flashbacks. For those who don't remember, that was the scheme that Big Entertainment used to get want it truly desires -- pay-per-view for all video titles. So you'd get the DVD for cheap, but then it would only play for two days. After that, you had to aquire a new license to watch the title which then lasted for 24-hours.

I think I'll stick to Greencine.com even though the farther away from CA you are, the longer it takes to get your rented DVD's.

As for CPM allowing online download "rentals" of titles, maybe the fact that they do have such a large collection of "crap titles" leaves them less concerned about folks finding ways around their 7-day, no share, viewing policy.

Bandai runs the same sort of service in Japan (downloadable episodes of Gundam, etc.) that you get to watch for a certain period of time.

I always thought this was a really good idea. Now, if this site only had stuff I wanted to watch, then I'd probably use it. I'm not so keen on the mail-order rental services, because my school's postal service is AWFUL, and I can just see myself ending up having to pay replacement fees or something.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, the "TotalVid, World's Largest Anime Download Library," line is a blatant mistake. There's no way it can compare to: http://anime.nifty.com/index.jsp, which has over 200 downloadable titles alone (not to mention a slew of downloadable comics and tokusatsu shows)

Well, at least this is a start, and it's anime that has taken up the gauntlet. So many braodcasters are still scared of this kind of thing, but it's clearly where things will be in the future. TV content online, accessed 24/7 instead of a few plays via normal tv, then back to the archives to gather dust (I mean other shows as well as anime here).

Why do we have to be at home to watch a show, when you should be able to download it and watch offline when you want it, while not having to build your life around tv schedules. That's what TiVo is for, and this is another step after that. Add portable media players in the mix and you'll never miss your fave show again.

Some of CPM's stuff may be crap but it's better than nothing at all. If Bandai have such a service perhaps CPMs effort might convince them to do the same stateside. Good way to test out shows I guess too, and bring in new customers.

This might give them a reason to re-issue "Outlanders" again.

You forgot to mention Dog Soldier,Zeguy and Battle Arena Toshinden...well Toshinden is one of my guilty pleasures. Razz Me and my Otakue buddies (at the time) were disapointed with harmegeddon it had cool potentual (almost like an Anime X-Men) but the overall execution was more focused on scenes of Dialog. But then again we were spoiled with the likes of Black Magic M-66,Appleseed,Dangiao,Guyver,etc.

it's been awhile since i last saw this film. (10 years to be exact) maybe i'll give it another watch, i may change my opinion. Cool

I e-mailed the folks at TotalVid about their lack of Mac support, and got a reply that they do want to support the Mac but can't until Microsoft implements their DRM in the Mac version of Media Player. They're collecting e-mail addresses for everyone who's asked for Mac support, and will e-mail them all when they get Mac support, so if you want it, let 'em know.

Personally, I think this is a great thing. I'm glad to be able to view anime cheaply. And this seems like a pretty legitimate use for DRM.

The price point seems all right, so that's one thing they've got going for them. I hope this thing takes off, since I'm a big fan of "try before you buy." The groundwork has been lain...

"TV content online, accessed 24/7 instead of a few plays via normal tv, then back to the archives to gather dust (I mean other shows as well as anime here)."

There is very good reason why networks never want on demand content via the internet. Advertising. Electronic media systems make all their profit from advertising. If you allow people to download shows from the internet, sans any form of advertising, then you will be losing potential money. Syndication - outside of DVD releases - is the only way to make extra money off of a television series.

Sure, you could use banners on the site to bring in additional revenue, but that is small potatoes compared to netting in nearly 125,000 for every 30 second spot [this number changes drastically depending on the size of the network, time of day, and program].

Charging each user for an episode will not bring in the same money that would otherwise be obtained through syndication sales or advertising. As long as the current reliance on advertising is the bread and butter of electronic media, you will never see large acceptance of legal, online television.

A fine assessment, though I'd have to throw Animation Runner Kuromi in with the "worth watching" pile.
