Wasn't Future Boy Conan available in other territories though? Korea, for instance, recently got a Blu-ray release this year. So I doubt that it's unavailable to outside studios, just wondering if there's another issue at hand.

^Yeah the show has been available elsewhere in the world for along time. It's out in France & Italy on DVD and was broadcasted on TV in the Middle East in the 80's & 90's.

I would dearly love to have this series on my shelf, it's a perfect show that is basically a 10 hour ghibli movie.

If we can get LoGH from Sentai then surely Future Boy Conan cannot be impossible if the issue is soley price? Which seems the best reason right now imo

Only--ONLY--Discotek would be interested in it, and if they haven't by now, it's got to be some rights issue over the book production company.

70's anime doesn't sell unless, like Miyazaki's name attached to Puss in Boots and Animal Treasure Island, it has some historical value.

And if the people in charge of Key's estate don't like Miyazaki's free-wheeling adaptation, they'd be under no obligation to agree to it.

Whether that adaptation was liked or not, whoever wanted it would have to pay royalties to the estate. That's the issue at hand. What do people not get about that? Anyway, I think the only way we can get Conan is if Ghibli is willing to negotiate a reasonable deal with Key's estate on the behalf of whichever U.S. licensor wants it. That, or maybe Disney will one day decide to do it, themselves, now that Ghibli is 'hibernating', and they're still looking for 'new' Miyazaki-related anime to exploit.

^ Only some select episodes. He wasn't series director.

Like others have said, it looks like this show has been made available in other areas too, so it's not impossible to re-license here. It looks like it even got a dub from Animax.

He was only a director on some episodes. Not the actual director. Isao Takahata was the director of Lupin III (1971). However I do believe he was the director of Sherlock Hound / Meitantei Holmes (1984).

That's not quite correct. He only directed a few episodes of Lupin, he wasn't in charge of the whole thing. FBC is still the only show he ever served as overall series director for, not just as an episode director as was the case with Lupin.

EDIT: Ninja'd... twice, and I forgot about Sherlock Hound as well, although he wasn't the only director on that one, so I'm not sure how that fits.

Miyazaki directed the first six pilot episodes, but the series was dropped and then picked up again without him--So, only partially directed, like Lupin.

AFAIK he didn't direct all the episodes either, due to production issues (only six are his) that slowed it down. By the time they resolved, he wasn't able to.

Oh. He's still credited as the (chief) director on most sources along with Kyosuke Mikuriya.
I think it should be counted as a TV anime he directed.

Directing a couple of episodes, doesn't make you a series director.

Please find me a source where he is not credited as the director.

It's ironic to say that Conan the future boy is a 10 hour Ghibli movie when the Ghibli studio didn't even exist at the time, that is in the late 1970s. It would be much more correct to assert that most Ghibli movies are a re-elaboration of the classic themes exposed in Conan. Conan is as pure Miyazaki as you get. He doesn't go into subtleties, nature is the future of humankind and any kind of technology and those that use it are bad. He hits on the head over and over again with this theme. He became more circumspect as he aged but in Conan no. It's a die hard ecological parable. Of course it is all mixed up with wonderful tom sawyeresque characters and a great human quality all around. Astounding to find such realism in a tv series for kids.
26 episodes and not one filler. It's pure story from the first to the last one. Great great directorial work. It still stands up today. This is one series that merits a great english dub.
