Well I've never seen Guilty Crown, nor do I intend to, but I love Egoist's theme songs for Psycho-Pass, and All Alone With You is probably my favorite ED ever so, er, is it alright to pick that? I feel like I'm cheating somehow.

For Sengoku period I'd also recommend Nobunaga Concerto. Despite the fact that there's a number of time-travellers, it's actually almost historically correct.

There's also Sengoku Musou with story also being accurate for the most part (a few charaters have extended life-spawns, though). That, if you don't mind shounen fights and video game designs. And not the best animation.

Oh, and I almost forgot about Gifuu Doudou: Kanetsugu to Keiji. It's pretty good as well.

As for the new top, I can say only one thing:
SATSUGAI SATSUGAI seyo
SATSUGAI SATSUGAI seyo

For the new survey I added the S Orchestra from Nodame Cantabile, based on the performance of Rhapsody in Blue.

That was a great list. I love history, but haven't really seen a ton of historical anime that cover the period before Sengoku(or take that period seriously). I'm really looking forward to watching Otogi Zoshi and Hyouge Mono.

From the description of the Heisei period, being a Japanese living in modern Japan kind of sucks. I am not sure how much better (or worse) living in the U.S. is, but I at least feel good with myself.

Two quick corrections, shouldn't it say chunibiyo instead of chunbiyo, and Penguindrum is 24 episodes long.

EDIT: I voted for Girls Dead Monster. I love LiSA's singing.

The Arceus movie in last place? Shame, I think it's the last good Pokemon movie, and the best one of Gen IV.

That's a VERY GOOD breakdown of the Heisei era (can't say as much for the show, haven't watched it yet):
Japan was putting its entire world identity into the 80's real-estate and foreign-investment bubble, and when it went pop, the sense of national arrogance they'd built for themselves as "Future economic leaders of the world, with the Western/American countries jealously plotting against them" left them adrift like post-Fall communist countries.

Now they've just got to put themselves together and work their obsession with connecting technology into a society where individualism can be integrated, without social rejection or self-conscious "I'm a rebel!" jackassery. A lot of the current Abe frustration toward getting back on the world stage again, even if it means actually fighting, gasp, wars, seems to reflect an inner frustration that there must be more to keeping a respected world country's standard of living than just getting rich and telling the barbarian countries to go hang.
The problem with Japan isn't the "Perverted Internet-addicted anime-otaku NEETs as the poisoning cancer of our society", it's what they're psychologically trying to get away from, and why it isn't working out for the country as well as it did in 1988.

(Sorry if that sounds like the mythical "soapboxing" the Mods keep threatening us with, but it's still anime related in that once the country can analyze itself to finally get that slap on the side of the head, maybe we'll get a few less danged "My Crazy NEET" comedies, and a lot less fringe-balkanized fanservice shows.)

I usually think The List is a bit silly, but this article is quite good! I could see myself going back to this to see which anime fall in which time period. A good addition for the Shouwa period would be Akagi, though it isn't really about culture Razz

I would definitely want to see a gig of Beck, or Mongolian Chop Squad. That series had some good music!

I've always loved history hence why I'm pursuing it as my major. I'm going to be attending Grad school to work on a PhD in hopes of someday becoming a Professor. However my main focus is in US history. But I have taken several classes in Japanese history, enough for it to be considered my second specialty or what have you. So this list is perfect for me! Despite my interest in Japanese history and the like, I've seen very few historical anime and I've always wanted to watch more. I've read Kenshin, but I would like to look into these other series. Thanks for making this list, I found it absolutely fascinating!

For post-war Showa, I'd also recommend Mai Mai Miracle (which as a bonus also has some flashbacks to the Heian era) and Only Yesterday.

On the poll, can we correct "Girls Dead Monsters" to "Girls Dead Monster" (ie, "Monster" is singular)? Thanks.

EDIT: Also, am I missing something in the absence of all the idol groups like μ's or Wake Up Girls? Are we limiting it to bands that actually play instruments?

One of the most successful anime at the Japanese box office, Princess Mononoke (it came out 18 years ago this past July 12), is set during the Muromachi Period (roughly between 1337-1573). Ashitaka is part of a group of the last remaining Emishi people who were first mentioned during the early 5th century (according to the "Emishi" article on Wikipedia).

The first list that goes with chronological order instead of favorism, and there's even honorable mentions. Very good list this week, Kenshin is a given, but I'm glad that Shounen Onmyouji, Night Raid and Bakumatsu were mentioned, really love those.

Still baffling me why there's no show cover the Kamakura period yet.

Okay, next do a version with other countries.

I'll heartily second that vote, for the stated reason. Very Happy
