Because they don't usually see anything wrong with the previous technology (LD -> DVD, DVD -> Blu-ray), Japan's usually two or three years behind the US in adopting new movie-TV technology.
Which means they should be catching on to Broadcast/cable TV -> Streaming right on schedule. (Although it's been one of the good qualities of anime that they're still pitching it to TV audiences. What happens when they make their own made-for-streaming Sidonias and Daredevils, that remains to be seen.) |

Awesome! I was wondering whether to get Hulu Japan or not, but I've preferred Netflix while I was in the states, so I'm glad that I have this choice now.

I do hope they include more animes to their pretty decent collection already. Investors are happy since Netflix gained 7% today. That's huge

I generally see this as a good thing. I feel like Netflix could actually have an impact on what anime gets made if they decide to do more of those "Netflix Originals" Or end up on a few production committees.

What took them so long? I'm really happy for them. Maybe it'l help combat anime piracy over there. I hope they like our Netflix originals.

I think it is worth mentioning at this point that three of the four companies behind the DVD format were Japanese, Sony was one of the main names behind Blu-ray (along with Panasonic, Pioneer, Hitachi and Sharp), and Sony was responsible for getting the first DVD and BD players into many, many homes in the form of the PS2 and PS3. |

The Japanese companies make it, whether the Japanese customers buy has always been a bit of a gap. (For those who remember waiting for Ghibli and Godzilla in '99-'00, because Toho "wasn't interested" in making DVD's, yet.) Think the only thing they ever beat North America to the punch on was HDTV, and that because most Japanese still prefer the TV networks to home theater. Which, again, is the reason why it "took so long" with Netflix and other streaming services. |

Netflix has nothing to do with the home video half, so it's not going to have any effect.

Nor is it likely going to have any effect on US anime, as Netflix Japan is only going to negotiate the rights for streaming in Japan. If we want a series, we'll have to get it the same way we get all our non-Crunchyroll US streaming anime shows: Wait for Funimation to toss us a bone. |
