Evil or Very Mad Why are con rates at anime cons always the highest .Of all the gaming, sf,and anime cons I go to anime con have the highest room rates. When ever I go to a sf or gaming con it's under a $100 a night. I live in the Chicago area.

It all has to do with location and the number of rooms the event will guarantee, not with the type of convention. Most conventions tend to be one-hotel gigs, and there's a MASSIVE difference between the requirements of a 500 person gaming convention, a 2500 person sci-fi convention, and a 20,000+ person convention.

I'm afraid Otakon's a high-visibility convention plunked in the heart of a major city during tourist season. We do the best we can, but the hotels are already discounting their rates.

Try booking through expedia or another online site. You can sometimes find rooms in the same hotels with better prices than the con rates.

The only down side is that most online reservation systems like Expedia require you to pay in advance. I don't particularly like paying for a hotel room 9 months in advance.

I've wondered why the Sheraton Inner Harbor wasn't included as a Con hotel last year and isn't on the list again this year. It's by far the most convenient hotel for this convention and where I'm putting up the ANN staff.

I'm hoping that the convention does include that hotel later though so that I can re-book my rooms at a convention rate.

We've been trying for years to get the Sheraton on board, but they have been completely unwilling to talk to us. Last year they were the only hotel in walking distance that didn't offer a convention rate. We always hope that will change, but no luck thus far.
