It may be a series that diversify's most people's opinions but you can't help but applaud Hiro Mashima for the insane amount of work he puts into Fairy Tail, be it spin-off series, omake chapters, involvement with the movies or whatever else it may be.

The man's a workaholic and deserves some rest once in a while.

It bothers me that Fairy Tail is popular enough to sustain its own magazine, but I think I might just be out of touch with modern anime.

The "Fairy Tail Magazine"s are simply a novel means of marketing the DVDs for the anime since it returned. Bundling the DVD with some decent extras, reducing the price point, and marketing it as an issue of "Fairy Tail Magazine" works out to a much larger volume of sales for the DVDs than a standard DVD release at a standard pricepoint.

That said, yes they are able to do this because the series is sufficiently popular. It's been eclipsed by Seven Deadly Sins, but it's still one of the best selling series in Weekly Shounen Magazine. Other series could likely do the same if they were so interested, they just aren't interested, or are even more popular and don't need to try something novel.
