This still doesn't change that I find Itachi to be a scumbag for killing his family.

but had no choice considering that his whole family was orchestrating a coup de tat that would have started a civil war. so you cant necessarily completely call him a scumbag. though i kinda had my doubts about mikoto's involvment in this.

Not his entire family. If you count every living Uchiha at the time that was living in the village, I think his mom was 1 of the more pacifist Uchiha members.
