The big issue isn't that the OP and ED was changed.

It's that no one bothered to tell us.

I'll still take the boxset, but it will be a while before I buy anything else Bandai related.

You'd think an American company that's a direct off-shoot of the Japanese company would have an easier time securing rights.

Bandai Entertainment has done a real piss-poor job with their Gundam Releases. I almost wish AD-Vision would handeling the series. hahaha

Considering the fact that the first OP, "Zeta - Toki wo Koete", was used in one of the recent PS2 games, AEUG vs. Titans, I find this really strange.

I preordered the set and won't cancel it over this but I am very, very upset Bandai-Ent. couln't inform us of the changes in advance. I presume a lot of us who preordered the set probably bought the original Gundam TV series even though it was dub only becuase Bandai quite clearly explained the issues involving the Japanese audio track. I don't think they would have lost all that many sales over this.

With this new problem in addition to issues with the Ghost in the Shell series plus player incompatibility problems and a few quality complaints on various other series, I'm finding it hard to get excited over future Bandai releases. If it's not a "must have" series like Zeta, I probably won't be buying many Bandai releases.

Hm, well, I guess that's too bad. Aside from the long waiting and editing of the opening and ending, I'm really not that angry at them (Bandai).

I'm just glad to finally know it was shipped yesterday, and I suppose I can live with just a silly little change in the OP and ED. I mean, at least they didn't dub over the entire soundtrack or change everyone's names or something...

Instead of pencil sharpeners there should have been an OST since
there isn't that great music anymore. I don't know if this is okay or not so sorry if it isn't, but, if you go to www.toonamiarsenal.com you can find in the almost Toonami area the first opening of Zeta with the right music and the second opening for Double Zeta.

I agree. I haven't been impressed with Bandai recently either. My poor .hack//legend of the twilight series doesn't even play in my dvd player due to compatiblity issues. Meh. Confused

At least everything seems to be in order with Wolf's Rain so far... but now I'm worried one of the discs will get an issue...

I always figured it was Manga's fault for the GitS: SAC issues. We all know how great they are when it comes to deffective DVD's...

Seconded. I'm not a huge fan of any Gundam themesongs, so I don't mind that much that the songs were changed. What bothers me is that Bandai just kind of omitted this detail. They made this change that, while minor, does impact every single episode, and they didn't think it was worth mentioning to those of us shelling out hundreds of dollars for this show. It certainly doesn't help that their whole handling of Zeta so far has been pretty terrible. They announced it, then they just sat on it for a year, and then they finally started announcing dates, but they kept delaying it, and...then this. And the extras? What the hell am I going to do with a bunch of pencil sharpeners? The point was moot for me because my box had actually already shipped before I even heard about these changes. I wouldn't have cancelled over something like this, but it's so frustrating anyway. Bandai's just messing with their customers because they know they can.

The song doesn't belong to the company, it belongs to the composer, Neil Sedaka, an American.

EDIT: Decided to go into a little more detail about this. Obviously Bandai has yet to make any official announcement about the music situation, and given how reluctant they always are to be forthcoming with problems (particularly with their UC Gundam properties), it's kind of doubtful they'll say anything, so this is all based on speculation. While the music itself most likely belongs to Bandai (which is why they can use it on the Japanese DVDs, in the Japanese videogames as mentioned earlier, etc.), Sedaka receives royalties for it. Releasing the song in the US most likely meant having to pay him more royalties, and Bandai apparently didn't feel like ponying up. I can't say whether that's because it was just an outlandish, exorbitant sum, or if Bandai simply thought they would make more money by selling the DVDs without telling anyone about the change than they would if they paid a little extra for the music, but the cynic in me wants to guess that it was probably the latter.

If Bandai couldn't get the license, it's doubtful ADV could have either. Besides, ADV sucks even more than Bandai, although I suspect that's what your laughter was alluding to.

Damn Bandai screwing over Gundam fans. I hope enough people complain about this and there is a recall. I know I will.

It would be nice if my avatar was real so I could use it's special feature on Bandai. Twisted Evil Sadly it isn't. Crying or Very sad

I'd prefer to unleash the Turn A Gundams "Moonlight Butterfly" on them or a good old fashion Colony Drop.

I don't think a recall is required. It would be a big hassle and a lot of money for Bandai to replace it like AnimEgo did for the Kimigore Orange Road (even though it did have the OP/ED jsut not the way the fans wanted it.) I would settle for a decent explaination and a big apology. Maybe they could provide a extra DVD with the original OP/ED music (textless animation preferably) for those who want it.

That was that, this is this. The key difference is that AnimEigo simply thought fans didn't care about the OP and ED and that people would rather get right to the episode. They were wrong, so they rectified the mistake.

Bandai didn't change the music because they thought they were improving Zeta. They changed it because they don't have a license to distribute those particular songs in the US. They don't have it now and chances are slim that they're going to ever get it because that means spending money not only to acquire the license but to reauthor the DVDs as well. And the fact of the matter is that from Bandai's point of view, this release isn't nearly as big a deal as it is to fans. Zeta's not going to make them a ton of money (for reasons we won't go into here), it's not going to revitalize Gundam in the US, it's not going to do anything really. It'll make them a little money and then they'll probably discontinue it (if they were going to release individual volumes, you would think they would have already at least mentioned it). What's the incentive for them here to give a damn about some music that in the grand scheme of things is going to have a negligible impact on sales?
