Considering the sheer level of marketing that went into this movie (more than any Japanese animated film I've seen outside of Ghibli really but given that it's Sony it's little surprise really cause that's what they do) and that it's producer claimed they wanted it to compete with Disney films and make at least 2 billion yen essentially billing it as a blockbuster (it is trying to use the Ano Hana staff to reel in viewers as well as the general ad campaign) in the long run for it to only pull 300,000 in five days with the advantage of 5 consecutive non work days and essentially pull even with Ano Hana I'm not convinced it's even going to reach it's box office tally unless they have some sort of benefits campaign planned like with the Love Live film.

Then again if there's one thing Japan absolutely loves above all other forms of drama it's weepy melodrama usually involving teens and young adults bawling their eyes out so who knows it could have legs yet. Personally I'll never understand the appeal of overly emotional crying anime. I mean I found Ano Hana decent enough back in it's day mind you because the cast worked as an ensemble and it didn't just rely on the crying aspect (this film on the other hands alternate title is something like "I felt my heart was screaming" which tells me a lot) and also it was 2010 and just about nothing else particularly good was coming out at all mind you but it was never quite that significant a work to me.

Oh well, this work just comes off as a vanity project and staff reunion thing for the purposes of cashing in one more time on brand power (so typical Sony animated film) somehow to me and I don't think I'll be seeing it any time soon once it's available overseas and that goes the same for the Ano Hana live drama that not so curiously came out at the exact same time.

The Japanese love their tragedies which was why Ano Hana was so popular. After all they're a country that made "A litre of tears" which must be the ultimate in tragedy porn. In the west we're also too used to greek tragedies which are inherently different to most asian tragedy.
