It is worth pointing out that the money flow has easily broken records in the context of visual novel Kickstarters.

Here and here are plots for the progress of funding for the other two big visual novel Kickstarters, Clannad and Grisaia. It took well over a month for both of them to reach $400,000, but Muv Luv already has $430,000 and the Kickstarter has been on for less than four days.

That's an interesting comparison, thanks. Another thing that struck me is the depth of the support, as expressed by the average contribution. With Grisalia and Clannad, that's $109 and $93 respectively, while the average Muv-Luv contribution now is way up at $163. I expect that's going to come down over the duration of the campaign as curiosity-seekers plop in $1 donations to get onto the BackerKit, but it's still a strong statement of support that the early contributors are in for much more than just a pre-order Steam key. But hey, BETA plushie!

The other thing worth noting is how the Kickstarter itself has perked up interest in the franchise. I did a history of Muv-Luv panel at Anime Central in May and 7 people showed up (3 of whom were my friends). Yesterday morning, I did an updated version at Anime Weekend Atlana, and probably had 15. Sure, that's still small, but the trend line is going in the right direction.

No matter how you look at that, that is a lot of money spent on what was a porn game.

Except that the kickstarter is for an all-ages version, and the games have like 1 H-scene per route over some 30 hours of story. Two in Alternative, but that one… um, let's not talk about that one. (shudder)

Anyways, sure, technically these are eroge and were developed and marketed as such, but let's be careful not to misrepresent them as just "porn", because that element barely matters.

Yeah, no one plays Muv Luv for the porn. In terms of fetishes, it's more famous for gorn anyways.

Jokes aside, most of the backers are little kids at heart who enjoy giant robots. I would have gotten the figure in a heartbeat if I had that kind of spare money.

Perhaps someone could explain this a bit further? I thought the audio for the visual novel of Muv-Luv was Japanese-only?

During the "coup d'êtat" arc of Alternative, spoiler[there's a skirmish between rebel and UN mechs in which the Japanese pilots speak Japanese over the radio, and are berated by the UN troops in English, saying "use English, the official international language", in English (and get the memorable reply "English can eat shit!").] Problem is, these English lines were dubbed by VAs for whom English was apparently a second language, so it sounds a little ridiculous to actual English speakers.

Check out the English-dubbed lines in this trailer for the Muv-Luv spinoffs (link goes to relevant time) to get a sense of what it sounds like.

It's only a handful of lines, and well worth replacing. I wonder if they should have offered the opportunity for fans to provide these voices as a high-end tier reward, but the logistics would likely be a pain.

The all "English" introduction scene for Alternative is far more infamous than anything later in the game. The English dialogue in Chronicles is more or less grammatically correct and pretty acceptable, Alternative's English comes up because it is sometimes borderline google translate nonsense level from before age had any grasp of the language and B-movie imitating a B-movie tier acting. It's presumably something they're embarrassed about now but it's become too big within the fandom to just remove and pretend it never happened.
