That was online only.
It had a tv airing afterwards.

So they showed a completely new season on TV? That can't be right. I can't find anything about this online.

I'm just assuming that they're referring to the first 26 episodes as seasons 1 and 2.

I feel like saying "3rd season" is a bit confusing (as seen by some of the comments so far) since Sailor Moon Crystal was just one big season/production despite covering 2 story arcs.

but anyway, yay! the Infinity Arc is my favorite and I'm excited about seeing the rest of the cast too! Hopefully they fixed some of the common complaints from the last production for the next one (and hopefully some profits to beef up the budget)

And that they get a good director...

For those unaware, Sakai left Toei after the show finished up production.

Excellent, hopefully it fixes the boring direction and uninteresting plot that most of the show suffered from. They need to bring on World Trigger staff who are experts in direction and enhancing the source material to modernize Sailor Moon.

I suspect that it may be broadcast on TV from the get-go this time, which would mean it would have a bigger budget. (The original online-only stream meant it had little or no advertiser support which means less $$$). That said, the renewal seemed like a logical step because now Toei has an excuse to put out a lot of new Outer Senshi merchandise.

I'm assuming that the new episode order will be the same as last time (?) (24-26 episodes) so I'm hoping that they'll mix in the "The Lover of Princess Kaguya" and the Dream arc side stories so they can stretch it out to an additional order of 24-26 episodes (containing the rest of the Dream Arc and the Stars arc) to finish the series.

Sakai is a good director. His episodes in e.g. Smile Precure were basically the best episodes in the show (well, the standard there was low anyway, but...).

Since he's a creative type, no doubt he was tired of being unable to realise is own vision because of the executive meddling involved in Crystal. A faithful adaptation of the manga is a terrible idea and he probably knew it.
