I'm asking for people's opinions as to why Digital Manga seems to be the only US manga licensing company that regularly uses Kickstarter for acquiring a title.

I knew they already had a bilingual kimba manga, but what the hell? Is this why there never was the kickstarter for it i guess?

Because apparently Digital Manga is a company under financial strain. DMI hasn't payed all its freelancers on time, published or reprinted books in a timely manner resulting in some cases having to renew licenses before a title is even published in English once, or re-establish contact with some JP partners to proceed with approval. For Tezuka (though the availability of other titles is atrocious too) they moved to a direct-to-customer sales model where distributors, wholesale and other retailers are cut out of the money pie. There are hopes to build something like 3,000-5,000 dedicated Tezuka customers to have the company independent.

And it’s not just classic manga, which can be tricky in the North American market that they turn to Kickstarter to get brand awareness and out the door but, some of their porn too. Which comic publishers I’m familiar with generally use profits from adult stuff to fund their vanity projects.
