A little troubling that two of the boys didn't care about her before she lost weight

You mean there's a strong physical component to attraction? Sounds pretty normal.

I know it's important to buy the first volume of a work when it's released in the US, especially if you want to ensure that future volumes in the series get released. However, in this case, I would advise people interested in this manga to wait a few volumes before getting into the series, or at least read some spoilers so they know what they're going to be getting into here.

Some of the things that Rebecca found "uncomfortable" in this volume are going to get way, way more problematic by the end of volume 3. If that's the kind of thing that bothers you, don't read this series.

It's also on Crunchyroll so you can check it out there too.

Kiss Him, Not Me, like Konjoh's work, follows Kae Serinuma, an overweight high school student who is a champion fujoshi, or female otaku. Like many (but not all) fujoshi, Kae's thing is yaoi

I'd just like to point out that the word 'fujoshi' is NOT the same as 'female otaku'. A fujoshi is a type of female otaku. So it would be better to say that she's a female otaku who's a fujoshi.

Especially the last sentence, you mean 'Like many (but not all) female otaku, Kae's thing is yaoi.

I'm a female otaku, but I don't like yaoi, so I'm not a fujoshi.

While I appreciate the warning, a volume, or even a couple of volumes of manga are not that big an investment. I find it is a lot easier to buy the stuff as it comes out. If I decide I don't like it after a few volumes I can always give them away. Tracking down the early volumes of a series after the fact can get difficult and expensive. There is a whole thread in the manga forum on this subject.

I enjoyed the first volume of this series. Even if I later decide I don't like the series it has paid for itself.

Thanks a lot for the heads-up. I've had to drop a few series over the years for things that bothered me in later volumes, that either weren't present or not as noticeable in the beginning.

Could you elaborate on what you're referring to without spoiling at least major events? (If that's not possible, I completely understand).

I'm having a hard time imaging where the romance will be coming from in this series.

Four boys find a girl interesting after her weight lost, but she wants to see them making out with each other. I can't even think of which boy she'll pick towards the end of this.

This might be a spoiler, but the fourth boy, the senpai is the only one who recognizes her after her weight loss and says she hasn't changed.

I love this manga but I'd read it just for Mutsumi-senpai.

Basically, if either of these statements from Rebecca's review raise any alarm bells, then abandon ship, because you're in for stormy waters:

Quote:
while she's too busy mourning to eat, she drops an unrealistic amount of weight, and when she finally returns to school, she's gorgeous

Quote:
at least two of the guys never thought of her as anything but “the big, kind of annoying girl” previous to her weight loss

Thanks! I'll have to give this some thought.

Same here. Mutsumi is the best boy, definitely. The fact that he recognised her after her weight loss when even her best friend didn't... Plus it's only like around volume 3 that spoiler[he shows any romantic interest in Kae. Previous to that he just enjoyed coming along on the ride and sharing mutual interests with Kae.]

Also, regarding the "uncomfortable" stuff later on, to be honest I don't think it's too bad? At one point spoiler[Kae gains weight again, but the boys (or most of them? I can't recall.) get over that because they realise they like her for who she is.]
That said, some of the boys can get pretty pushy, but they usually get in trouble for it anyway.

At some point she will have to confess her otaku fetish to one, if not all of those boys ,or they find out some other way, but either way get grossed out by it and just ignore her as "that weirdo girl who wants us in a BL relationship."
Want to read this? Not me.

I just took another look at this manga. While she did lose an unrealistic amount of weight, that is not why she became both beautiful and unrecognizable. It is clear that she also let her hair down and took off her glasses. It is a clearly established concept, even in western movies, that doing this automatically changes a young woman from plain to gorgeous.

I'm still trying to figure out though, how did losing weight improve her eyesight. There is no mention of contacts.

The simple answers would be either A) that she just learned to deal with her poor eyesight without the glasses. or B) that she suddenly started wearing glasses without it being mentioned in the story (poor over-site but possible).

And yes I do totally buy depression can make someone lose an unhealthy amount of weight very quickly.

In this particular story, the sudden weight-loss gorgeous transformation is treated as utterly absurd and a joke, never meant to be taken seriously for a moment (which is the only way it can really work, I'd say). I don't mean anyone's wrong to be offended by the trope, if it's an issue they're sensitive to, but it's definitely handled in a different way than in the many shoujo series that play the transformation straight (/portray it as a realistic possibility).
