WOW. That is awesome.
I mean, is it even POSSIBLE for a Japanese anime film to even break the top 10 in a Western country, with the exception of quotequote "Westernized" anime fads like Pokemon? I am impressed. Just what is the status of anime in France anyway? |

In 10 years, japanese animation became famous and acknowledged by the media. Howl received tremenduous reviews, like Spirited Away before. The trend is good and Miyazaki is no longer compared to Disney. It's slightly different for TV anime, but Miyazaki's movies (or even Otomo's Steamboy) earned a good reputation in the last 10 years.

If, by "Western", you mean "United States and Canada", Top 10, quite possibly, if it's a slow time of year for big American films and the anime film is on a couple of hundred screens. Top 5... not a chance. |
