I'll just lazily copy my reply from the retail forum since.

Maybe I'm overthinking it but this really doesn't bode well at all and sounds like there is a deeper issue going on. Rokka is the 5th release by them since they started this year and out of those titles only 1, Yuki Yuna could be considered a candidate to do decent with those higher then Aniplex price points and the others seem to be really, really niche titles.

If they cancelled the standard release of these sets my mind can only think because Rokka is selling so poorly/LE is selling so few compared to standard sets that they can't afford having the only sales coming from half price standard sets.

I've said it before but the upcoming Sound Euphonium release is probably going to make or break this company as I can't see anyway they can stay afloat with the higher then Aniplex prices if they don't have the catalog or heavy hitter like AoA does. I can only hope the reason Rokka which aired after Euphonium but is getting released first is because they are putting all their effort into that release, dub, multiple purchase options, possible CE redesign etc...

Again maybe I'm overthinking it but the NA market has moved away from high price singles with few episodes to cheaper complete series/half season sets and AoA can do what they do because of the longevity and catalog they have. I want Ponycan to succeed as more companies the better but I don't see how they can with their current model.

PonyCan USA also so thoughtfully put up the Volume 2 CEs for pre-order today. Rolling Eyes

So yeah, we now know what PonyCan's priorities are.

**** PonyCan.

I was ecstatic to hear about this at first. Rokka wasn't perfect, especially regarding it's production, but it was undeniably unique, so to know PonyCan was willing to throw it's fans a bone by shelving out a more standard release was great news. For them to just back out at the last minute like that is cheap and scummy.

Likely there wasn't enough demand to support two different releases of the show. Unfortunate, but that's likely a money-saving business decision.

Had no desire to purchase the series but, sucks for fans who wanted the more affordable option. I didn't enjoy the ending of Rokka and after hearing that the Japanese releases weren't doing well, the odds of a sequel are too low for me to support the series.

PonyCan really needs to be careful or else they'll end up spending too much for series that didn't generate a strong following. Hopefully, Sound! will have both standard and collectors edition since I loved the show enough to get the collectors version.

Sigh... There go the chances of me picking up Rokka. I guess I can hope that 10 or 15 years from now somebody picks it up as a license rescue and does a budget re-release.

It's a shame the series seems destined for failure; I just finished reading the fourth volume and would love to see the rest of it get animated. The last scene in the anime gives a completely misleading impression about where the series is going to go next...

If the release of both editions was slated for Dec 10, approximately one month from now, then there was likely some money already tied up in the standard edition. If nothing else PonyCan had their suppliers production time reserved for the disks & packaging and I doubt they can just cancel without paying or forfeiting some sort of fee.

I'm really saddened to see this happen, they really should not ignore the larger part of the market here in North America.

I wanted to get Rokka but i'm goinga have to wait awhile, i don't do collector's editions any more.

after 200-300+ dvds one just doesn't have the shelf space anymore.

I am often an apologist for high prices, but PONYCAN USA is being stupid. Aniplex USA has used the CE BD/DVD, SE BD, SE DVD model for Madoka and Kill la Kill, and it apparently works for them.

The three editions model is what could make PONYCAN USA survive in the N.A. market. I don't see a long future for them if they stick only to their 4 episodes for $70 model.

It's just weird that Pony Canyon was doing this. They had a panel at Youmacon in Detroit a couple weeks ago and the rep there was saying they were offering both the LE and the std editions for Rokka to see how the fans would buy them. You know, what sells and in what quantities to learn some marketing info from it. If you don't offer the product you won't get the data you want.

That's a shame too. I wanted the standard editions as well. Who knows, maybe enough outcry will get them to reconsider.

I'm really hoping that Sound! Euphonium isn't subjected to this, as said above by DuchessBianca it could easily be a make or break for the company, and with Euphonium being such a popular title it'd be crazy not to have both a standard edition and collectors available.

So I was thinking about buying it cause it sounds like its not going too well and I rather liked the series. Plus I love storyboard, so the bonus were nice. But then I notice the 70$ was for 4 episode, that's insane (even 40$ for 4 is a bit much).

Honestly they should just go for CE with all 12 episode for like 80-90$.

Oh PonyCan, you're doing things so wrong right now...

But why cancelling the standard releases? Wouldn't that increase the sales of Rokka? It isn't that popular to guarantee a high number of Limited Edition sales. It is not the hit of Summer season nor of 2015. Its sales are horrible in Japan. Why did they do that? Something must've happened indoors that made them cancel the Standard Editions, sure, but we at least deserve a proper explanation as to why they are doing these things. I don't care what the CEO of Right Stuf has to say over Twitter. I want someone from freaking PonyCan to explain why they did that. I hope ANN gets an answer soon.

Well, that's thoroughly depressing. I honestly don't understand the logic behind this decision. If the show isn't selling well in Japan, what market could they even be protecting?
My rightstuf catalog just came in today with an ad that is almost an entire page boasting blu-ray and DVD will go on sale. This paired with any possible pre-orders that took place and I would imagine rightstuf can't be too happy either. Not to mention how many of their potential customers will be left with a bitter taste after having more affordable options dangled in front of them like a carrot.

I fail to see how this is a good decision from any angle.

I can't believe it. Rokka was a great series. I can't get the series I like in a standard edition but other fans can get what they like. It's not fair.

[Edit]: I toned down your rhetoric for general consumption. Errinundra.
