Ah one of my favorite series is back.

The special episode was very mysterious with Ougi although I find her to be one of the most interesting characters of this season so far. And right now, business is picking up again with Oikura's problem with Araragi. The word plays in this series still remains colorful imo and I hope it can keep it up.

This franchise always knew how to mess with its readers'/viewers' minds, and what is a better way that repressed/forgotten memory + mathematics Laughing

Yeah, I really feel like this is the best monogatari has been in a long time. The dynamic and tempo of conversation between Ougi and Araragi is mesmerizing; Ougi seems to insinuate herself as a piece of machinery in Araragi's own thought process and sometimes almost disappears as a distinct character, transforming instead to a pure psychological direction Koyomi applies to himself, which her aesthetic is obviously meant to play up to. The writing has also been a pretty noticeable step-up from previous seasons. I kind of balked at the sudden brilliance of this line from episode 3, where the whole dynamic between Ougi and Koyomi seems to crystallize:spoiler["I've come to despise myself a little bit."

"Then that little bit is how much I'll love you."]

Ep 1-3 review wrote:
Monogatari's aesthetics are as strong as ever in this arc, making great use of bizarre geometry and stark, shifting color schemes to visually portray the emotional battles of the characters.

What it also manages to do is make you forget the entire anime is essentially two characters in a dialog in mostly a single room. The artistic merit is real however.

Was Ougi in any of the previous seasons of the series? Nick's review mentions that she is sometimes changes gender. Where did that occur?

She is undeniably creepy but I still like her -- maybe my favorite character this year.

she was in a couple of arcs during Second Season, and appears in both the Hanamonogatari and Tsukimonogatari OVAs. In Hanamono specifically Ougi presents themself as a boy, wearing a male school uniform and insisting to Kanbaru that they've always been a guy

Ougi is a male in Hanamonogatari. He/she even admitted it if I recall correctly, something like, "Oh, right. I was a female back then." Lol.

Regarding Sodachi's backstory, is it just me who feel "Oh.. hmm, okay" at spoiler[the fact that she lived in an abusive family/parents. I mean, hasn't it been used before... Hanekawa, anyone? So I'm kind of a little disappointed of the recycled backstory. Also maybe because I've been really expecting what Nisio's gonna mess with her.][/spoiler]

^ ^^

Was that the kid that was riding the bicycle? Forgot about that and didn't make the connection.

If so, strange then and weird now. Wonderful in all cases.

Monogatari is always a pleasure to watch, and I'm happy that this new season has started with such an amazing content. Ougi and Araragi dynamics are one of the best of the entire series (they were meant to be together), and that makes me ask why Ougi wasn't a main character ever since Bakemonogatari.

It's sad, but Owarimono's direction really puts in shame the one from The Perfect Insider. While the latter one tried its best to present in an entertaining way quite long monologues and dialogue between its main characters, those felt really boring because the scenery in which they were presented (a gray office which we could only see from one camera angle) was not appealing at all. In contrast, Owarimonogatari's aesthetics always looked beautiful. Its direction team knows how to make a boring classroom a beautiful piece of art. The constant change of colors and camera angles really help to keep Ougi and Araragi dialogues entertaining, especially the ones from the first episode.

If things keep up the same until the end, then this is going to become my favorite Monogatari season and maybe the best show of the year.

I actually don't mind that, because what really matters are the direct consequences of living like that to their mindsets and how that triggered the appearance of "apparitions", although we don't know yet if there's an actual apparation affecting Sodachi at the moment or if it's just spoiler[pure hate] towards Araragi.

The line was "Oh, right, I'm a boy now", after Kanbaru points out that a guy shouldn't be asking her about her period. While Ougi doesn't explicitly admit to having been female, it's still a slip up that throws doubt on the "I've always been a boy" insistence. That's another curious aspect of their character - constantly trying to play out a character or a scenario, doing a rather unconvincing job of it and an even less convincing one of covering up blunders (most blatantly in Nadeko Medusa), and then never getting called out on that by other characters. Either there's something about Ougi that lowers everyone else's guard and forces suspension of disbelief, or everyone is just too creeped out to say anything.

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that Araragi mentioned that both Kanbaru and Nadeko helped him sort out how he knew Oikura from even before middle school? I mean I'm just concerned that they're totally skipping those conversations. I was really looking forward to how a conversation with araragi and nadeko would have developed.
Or perhaps d Owarimonogatari's events precede Otorimonogatari? spoiler[(Nadeko's Breakdown as a God) ]

They do precede Otori. I figure next week we'll get the how Araragi figured out Sodachi's knowledge of his family.

Yup! the anime's adapting arcs out of order. Ougi Formula, Sodachi Riddle, and Sodachi Lost arcs all take places after Tsubasa Tiger (and the Mayoi Jiangshi/Shinobu Time) arc, but before Nadeko Medusa. It took me some wiki-searching to figure that out myself.

A nitpick, but, with the exceptions of Hana and the as of now unreleased Kizu and Koyomi, the anime has been adapting the arcs exactly in order - the order in which they originally came out. Fans may argue over whether or not this anachronic order is the right approach to telling a story like this, but it isn't just another whimsical idea by Shaft, since it was just like that in the original material.

I'm I alone in thinking that the latest episode somehow didn't have art and character looks of the caliber we've come to expect of the Monogatari series?

I hope they compensate for it with Oikura wearing some spectacular pajamas next week.

It would be hard to top the naked route that they had used before.

The artwork in this arc is definitely different. For one thing I don't recall them using filtered photography for the backgrounds before. That was where they were strolling the courtyard.

I also see very much fewer objects of art (paintings, sculptures) than I am used to seeing, although the appreciation for architecture is still there. Even the run-down apartment building where they ended up.

Either the artists concepts are evolving or we are looking at them trying to stretch a lower budget.
