This is honestly suprising to me. I just assumed that Sentai absorbed all of ADVs licenses. Save the FMP series that Funi got.

Glad to see that it will be available again. I have seen the anime before, but it was through less than legal means so I'll be happy to have a chance to officially own it the next time I view it.

I fully expected Discotek was in the job of rescuing all the "lost" ADV dubs (eg. Dragon Half), but nice to know that Sentai still looks after its own.
For years, we were frustrated that we had to tell new fans to trust us that AzD was one of the 10 Greatest Anime Comedy Series Ever Made, but, er, had to go look up clips on YouTube to believe us, since the disks had been out of print for seven years.
(And then finding nothing on YouTube but music-AMV mashups about Osaka.)

I would guess that some of what they didn't lose in the Sojitz debacle simply expired because they didn't have the funds to maintain the prior catalog and acquire new shows on top of that. ADV shut down and subsequently reorganized due to monetary troubles, so it isn't hard to to see where they might have needed to let stuff go and re-acquire the more popular titles.
I'm kind of curious to watch this again. I started it years ago in college and dropped it after several episodes because I wasn't finding it that humorous. The enduring interest online and at conventions, and the fact that I've been watching shows lately that I had no interest in before, makes me wonder if maybe I'll enjoy it this time.

Even though I already have the box set for this, it's good that they're re-releasing it since it's kinda a hard purchase nowadays.

I loved this show. Every time Osaka would show up, I knew I was about to laugh. She didn't even have to say anything, her facial expressions were enough to crack me up. Of course, this was before I learned the term "moe" and all its connotations (negative or otherwise). I wonder if viewing it now would be a vastly different experience.

I'm happy to see this one being brought back for the newer generation to see. I've got the ADV boxed set so I doubt I'll buy again unless they do something phenomenal with a Blu-Ray release.

If this gets a decent-looking Blu-Ray release, I will definitely double-dip.

Didn't Aesir already have the license and put out a rerelease a few years ago? Seems like Section23 is just moving the title from one of its holding companies to another.

My school library had the manga, and I enjoyed reading it, along with Yotsuba&! Both hilarious series. Glad to see the anime back in-print.
As far as I understand, all of ADV's titles that they had licensed pre-Sojitz either expired, or were reissued under AEsir Holdings if they didn't (except Elfen Lied, which stayed under ADV for some reason), so I guess Azumanga Daioh really did expire.

Being a 2002 show I can't imagine AzuDai would look any better in Blu-ray unless they retrace the whole thing. Probably better off leaving it to blurry DVD.
What I'd really to see is a release that contains the production and translation notes from the original ADV singles. AFAIK all the boxsets are completely devoid of extras.

It was an acquired taste when I started out too--the writers have a quirky taste for milking gags verrrrrry sloooowwwwly, like Chinese-water-torture comedy--but by the first "Summer beach house" Ep. 5 (and Chiyo's reactions to Ms. Yukari's driving), I was hooked.
As a pre-digital/post-film TV series, probably won't get a Blu--Or at least if Sentai does try it, it won't look as good as the Ranma upgrades, but not as bad as the Sailor Moons.
