Having read the original novel, I was very very impressed by the story and the tone. Consider how sensitive the time period is, the story actually puts strong focus on the head-on spy warfare, instead of glorifying or whitewashing what imperial army's invasion did during WWII.

Yes, this is a straightforward military/spy drama, if certain historical references are concerning you, don't be.

Is the novel stories episodic in nature or does it have any main plot (and thus also a main antagonist, for example)?

I read the manga adaptation, and it's pretty much episodic and no main plot. It's got some stories which can be independent, not connected to other stories, and only tied by the organization.
I wish the anime will have at least an underlying main plot throughout the stories.

So I assume there aren't any female, "Agent Carter"-like secret agents in this rag tag all-guy group, huh.

Good, because I usually avoid WWII stuff like the plague, but that cast. That cast... several of my favorite teams are there entirely. Wow.

Also, they're a lot prettier than the Matsuno brothers. Just saying.
