From Impel Down until the Return to Sabaody arc, One Piece is amazingly dark. It's pretty clear that the Straw Hat crew's experiences so far were a breeze compared to the trails and tribulations of the New World. The humorous bits here and there really do help to balance out the serious story line.

however its gonna get more darker once the paramount war arc gets here. not to mention the fish man island arc.
